As this has become the covid thread, here's my 2 cents.
Rocky and Norfolk Kid (and others), I am as sick of the impact of this stupid virus on our lives as you are.
I resent the impositions on our freedoms and ability to make an income.
But just speaking personally I think the overall motivations of our elected leaders are sound. Even though they don't really know exactly what we should be doing in terms of restrictions. Gladys has tried not to be too over the top with past outbreaks, and has copped her share of criticism, but has got away with it. This time we have an outbreak that may or may not have been thwarted by earlier lockdowns.
There has been blatant manipulation of this crisis both by the media and both sides of politics - Dan Andrews had his disaster last year and copped it from the conservative media so I guess its' Gladys' turn now from the left leaning mainstream media.
The reality, if you can break it down is this:
This virus is no joke, and the scenes we saw early in the pandemic in the west of hospitals full, people dying in streets, mass morgues, hospital staff dying from catching it, were not imaginary. they are still real in places like India, Indonesia and Africa.
There have been some disgraceful misinformation acts but by far the worst is the vaccine misinformation.
The facts are both of the vaccines we have in OZ are 50% effective ate reducing transmission and over 90% effective at reducing your chance of getting seriously ill and surviving (likely with lifelong disability) or death. The chances of serious side effects such as clotting, are around 1 in a million.
If you compared this pandemic to other major national threats in history such as wars, asking its citizens to take the 1 in a million chance of dying from a vaccine is not that much of an imposition compared to wartime demands of citizens to fight in wars, where the risk of harm was many orders of magnitude greater than getting a jab in the arm.
If you look at Great Britain, they copped the brunt of this thing far worse than us, but are now in a position at 70% vaccination rates to open everything permanently with no restrictions. Even with high daily transmission rates in the 30s and 40s of 1000s, their death and morbidity rates are relatively very low (less than 50 deaths per day and ICUs not full). This has to be due to the morbidity and mortality reducing effects of a largely vaccine immunised population.
