Dunno guys. To me there's nobody on this thread able to back up claims that a) it's not racially motivated, and b) Goodes deserves it.

I've tried to make my (clumsy) case, and there's now two excellent articles posted on the matter, both seemingly incontrovertible.

Not sure what else I can do other that to suggest to anyone who hasn't done so: read Bansai and my posted articles; accept that Goodes is no more of a niggler than many other players not to cop a booing; accept that being a white, Christian Australian man in his prime is not the same as being an Australian Aboriginal man; and lastly - and I opened my argument with these points way back on page whatever: Australians hate a tall poppy and think a black man should know his place.

In my opinion, the whole matter comes down to why people boo??
Hatred and tribalism has always been a part of footy culture in Australia.

Some people boo cause they are racist...sure I acknowledge that.
Some people boo cause they hate him as a player.
Some people boo cause they dont like what happenned with that young girl....I personally found that offensive but I wouldnt boo him cause of that. My issue is with the mindset of a 13 year old and him taking a radical stance against it like he did. But hey, Im not indigenous and Im not carrying that baggage.
Some people boo cause its fun and "trendy."
Some people boo cause they know he hates it and there are plenty of haters in life.

To blanket it all as racism is not correct. its not all about race.


A very smart footy layer once said to me that he welcomes the hate. Let them come in and scream and yell cause ultimately they are paying my wages. They pay their 30 bucks and that gives them a voice to vent all their repressed anger. Its a purge.....................society is to blame!!!!!!!!!!

What do you base this on? The way they handled ASADA? The number of off field incidents their players are involved in (as much or more than in the NRL). It is all about perception and the way they control the media, Rebecca Wilson for example is employed by the AFL as an official ambassador of the competition, yet is paid to report on it and other sports (hence the way she slams the NRL at every opportunity). Google AFL and the word assault and see how many hits you get, same with the word rape. The thing is the media play these incidents down as the AFL have the southern media in their pocket and these stories don't rate up north. That is why when NRL players get into trouble, you hear about it so much more.

I was speaking about my observations at the inroads they made with junior footy and amateur competitions - specifically in the Sydney area.

As far as your point, I totally agree with you. However, rightly or wrongly they are getting up over the NRL in the media. Some people, such as yourself, see it. The majority don't give it a second thought.

I think the NRL commission got formed 5-10 years too late.

People get booed on the sporting field all the time. No one but the people who boo him know if there doing it if they dis -like the bloke for there own reasons or there doing it because he is aboriginal. Like others have said 90% of the people who boo him are just jumping on the bandwagon
It's a bit rich in my opinion the league asking the fans not to boo but that's just my opinion
