    • as far as qualifying in eighth spot goes we're where we were before the round started, same as we'd have been if we'd won last night and the dolphins had won

      • not to mention that it could have been worse. dolphins could have won and had the inside running to make the 8, grant didn't have to be wiped out or kamicamika hia-ed and the dogs could have won forcing the storm to play a full strength team v us next week.
we're in the 8 and if we can jag a win next week we're back on track

For this to happen, we would need the following results

Dolphins - LWL (v Manly, Titans, Raiders)
Cronulla - BWL (Bye; v Knights, Dogs)
Penrith - WWW (v Raiders, Dogs, Dragons)
Storm - WLW (v Dogs, Roosters, Broncos)
Manly - WWL (v Dolphins, Dragons, Warriors)
Warriors - WWW (v Titans, Eels, Manly)

That would give us a home semi against the Sharks.

(Of course, now that I've said that, we'll probably get flogged by Parramatta.)
          Very prescient.
1985: 1 try vs Parramatta, 1 try vs Manly, 1 try vs Wests, 2 tries vs Souffs
1986: 2 tries vs Illawarra, 1 try vs Balmain, 2 tries vs Norths.

That's a very good way of looking at it, however I am not confident that they'll win another match this year.

              • If we don’t beat Storm, we are just about done. Dolphins are ahead on F&A. One can assume they will beat the Titans and improve their F&A with respect to ours if we lose to Melbourne. The final round they play at home to the faiders who will rest most of their team and we will need to beat the vermin by 15-20 points or possibly more.

I don’t think Ricky will rest many at all. He wants the MP & if the Storm are in the hunt he won’t risk it.

Also, the Phins were diabolical against Manly, and the Titans will have something to play for as they could still avoid the spoon assuming Newcastle keep losing.

I believe you are one of the very few that think the Roosters will make a dent in this year’s competition.

Regarding the Storm game, I agree with you and I also have a feeling that our forwards will aim up against them.

i think it's more that everyone is disappointed about last night. time will tell how we go next week but we're more than a mathematical chance to make the finals

                      • I guess it is up to us. Win our next 2 and we are in.

I am still gutted after getting belted by the woeful Eels.

Let's get it on against the Storm. No excuses.

Manly and the Dolphins still have to deliver in order to make it too. We belted both so I don't buy the argument they are somehow more deserving than us just because we lost to Parra, who are shyte but can show up...

Now sure the two below us have the Dolphins and Merge respectively whereas we have the Storm. However, in the final round they have the Wahs and the Faders so it evens out.

IDK. Last night s*cked and it was dumb of us to lose it as it woulda wet cemented our position in the 8. However our performance compared with others over the full 27 rounds will determine whether we 'deserve' to be in the 8. Only 8 teams make it and the only way you 'deserve' to be there is if you finish in the top 8.

Right now Penrith's on 31 and they are not guaranteed a spot in the 8...

                          • I think it'll be a miracle to beat the Storm to be honest. They really have the wood on us, and we aren't playing well enough to end that run. The last time we beat the Storm, if my stats are accurate was in 2019 in the prelim. 2019.
Considering they've one 4 on the trot (including beating us already), and it's in Melbourne, it does not bode well.

I do think we'll clean up the Rabbits, although I'm not convinced it'll be a wide margin.

If we lose both games we are toast.

We need to win at least 1 game of the 2. I expect us to finish on 30 points, and I do not believe our F & A of 72 will alter that much (could end up anywhere from 55 - 95 I think)

The Sea Eagles are only a chance of catching us if they absolutely obliterate both the Warriors and the Dragons. We're talking needing a 50+ point margins across both games inclusive. I do not think they are capable of that.

The Dolphins however might get us if they can crack the Raiders. I believe they will beat the Titans comfortably. And I do believe Ricky will rest people for their final match, so I'd still give Redcliffe a hope of causing an upset.

It'll be an interesting couple of weeks.

If Canberra rest a lot of players they run the risk of being underdone in week 3, should they win their first finals game.

We last beat the Storm in 2022.

But yes it's unlikely well best them on Friday. They'll simply punish us for making so many errors.
