I'm envious. Actually went out and bought a new reel today because most of my fishing gear is in disrepair after years of neglect and i want to go for a fish when i'm up the coast in a couple of weeks. When i stayed at Smokey Cape Lighthouse cottages the caretaker of the property caught three nice whiting off the beach and gave them to me and the better half to have for dinner, he even filleted them for us after showing us the whole fish. Nothing much better than a feed of fresh sand whiting. I wonder if my old yabbie pump will work after being in the cupboard unused for years, plenty of yabbies where i will be staying and whiting in the river there and also the beach, mind you would be happy with a nice flattie or bream also.

I do love Whiting! I fillet the bigger ones and keep the smaller ones that are just legal 27cm to 30cm whole and eat around the bones.

Good chance the rubber washer on your yabbie pump has perished. BCF sell replacements for under $5 off memory.

There's some big Whiting in Lake Conjola at present.

I'm hopeless at filleting so always do any whiting i catch whole, my mother used to cook the ones we caught at Port Macquarie just done in a bit of flour whole in the pan and they were delicious even with the bones.
I will get the yabbie pump out and check it out but don't hold out much hope for it so might not take it away, i still haven't forgotten how to get beach worms and there are also usually a few pippies on the beach where i'm going, the pippies used to work well in the river at the place also but you cannot take them off the beach these days

                          • I think I’ll make baked enchiladas tonight. I’ve really been struggling for inspiration for meals post Christmas and our recent family get together. I just feel flat from too much Christmas goodness and too much planning and cooking.

                            • It's kinda soup weather.

Maybe a bone broth, miso, ramen with roast pork, bok choy, and noodles style soup.
