Robinson wants basics back as Manu races clock

Roosters coach Trent Robinson wants to see his star-studded side get through the basics during the early rounds of the 2023 season before they can evolve and get more expansive in their play.

Robinson lamented a poor showing against the Sea Eagles on Friday night in the side’s final pre-season hit-out before their history-making Round 1 clash against the Dolphins on March 5.

The Tricolours have been tipped by many to go all the way this season but Robinson warned the likes of centre pairing Joseph Manu and Joseph Suaalii won’t have licence to roam the field until the side connects across the park.

“You guys will have to wait and see there, I don’t think any of us are getting excited after tonight about what the top-end [guys] can do,” Robinson said following the match.

“We need to get the basics of the game sorted first. We missed the cohesion of middle and edge tonight for nearly all the game except for three sets towards the end.

“We looked disjointed in our combination of middle and edges, and we need to improve that.”

The Roosters, who have been slow starters losing four of their last five Round 1 matches, have a bye in Round 4 with clashes against the Dolphins, Warriors and Souths in the opening month a chance to get themselves right.

"You want to play better than what we did tonight,” Robinson said.

"We want to start well but you’ve got to take in the length of the season. The extra bye changes it slightly this year."

Robinson said Manu was no guarantee to be available for the season opener as he continues to recover from a facial fracture.

Manu missed the All Stars clash on February 11 after picking up the injury during a Roosters pre-season training camp in Queenstown.

Robinson expected Suaalii (head knock), Luke Keary (jaw), Sam Walker (COVID-19) and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves (back/hamstring) to play in Round 1 but Manu was more in doubt.

“He’s not definitely back [in Round 1], he’s four weeks so he’s pretty close,” Robinson said.

“There’s going to be doctor’s advice and another scan to see if he’s going to be right there. He didn’t get a plate, so that’s a positive in terms of the severity but enough to get a crack in there.

“I’m not trying to downplay it, he’ll be touch and go for Round 1.”

The loss of Suaalii on Friday night after he got his head caught in the wrong spot during a tackle was a frustrating one for Robinson after his switch from right wing to left centre this year.
“I would’ve liked more time, he’s been going great out there at left centre but we got to see [limited minutes]," Robinson said.

“It would’ve been great last week and this week to get more minutes but he’s looked very comfortable in the pre-season.

“He’s had to learn some different traits there, playing on the right side with a right arm carry but his ability to play both sides of the ball he did it at the World Cup.

“His quality allows him to do whatever side.”

Poor ball control and low set completions lead to other errors - missed tackles and ill discipline as obviously you have to do more defence the less ball you have and these errors mount as a result

It's not only the basics that need attention it is also the drop off in intensity and attention to details in games as well.

Need to find a consistent level of footy that they can play over 80 minutes week in week out if they really hope to be a genuine contender.

2022 Penrith was the highest scoring team with 723 points with a set completion rate of 81% - So a team doesn't have to run 5 times from dummy half and kick on the last tackle to achieve high set completion rates.

Be interesting to see the improvement in basics that is needed in 2023.

Penrith certainly are the benchmark but of course you are not worrying about them until you play them so the Roosters need to take the cliche of one game at a time to another level- no slacking off against sides they should beat by taking them lightly as was the case in several games last season

The coach talks a lot. There is pressure on him for sure given the squad he has.

He is obliged to talk. Contractual obligations.

The majroity of this squad has been together a long time and are representative players....here we are again talking about getting the basics right etc etc two weeks out from the comp. Fark these comments grow old and are so predictable. Makes me cringe almost as much as when we hear 'Roosters style of footy'...how long since we've seen that and is it relevant any more ??

The game has changed a lot since we went B2B, I'm hoping how we play will sort of evolve eventually and we are a threat again !

Not based on last nights trial but I'm not convinced we can win the comp with our depth

Front row depth has me extremely concerned, as does a lack of speed pretty much across the park.

I love Keary and Sammy, but when Manu has moved in closer that's pretty much when we have appeared to play a type of game where i could somehow see us beating the Panthers etc

Apart from Smith none of our signings will improve our game.

I think we will finish 5th or 6th.

          Just my opinion

I get sick of all the unnecessary losses we have. We should belt the Dolphins by 30, not suffer an upset loss. I want to beat the Rabbitohs comfortably. This team has underachieved since 2019. Let's get it on ROOSTERS in 2023.

Maybe Turpin may start at 9. Smith to 13. Radley in the back row until Angus comes back.

Good to see Robbo be fairly scathing of the team and expect us to go back to basics instead of talking about grand visions and "Roosters footy".

So the coach thought the Roosters weren't good. I wonder if a certain poster here wants to throw him off The Gap too.

Agree with everything written in this post. Well said. Yes, I'm tempering my expectations already.

The truth is, if Easts improved the execution on their plays by 5% last night, they win the game. The Hutchinson no-try was a joke and the Paulo spill was disappointing. When Manly ran in a few easy tries during the first half, the blokes defending were not even trying. Nor will (should) they be there in the season proper.
1985: 1 try vs Parramatta, 1 try vs Manly, 1 try vs Wests, 2 tries vs Souffs
1986: 2 tries vs Illawarra, 1 try vs Balmain, 2 tries vs Norths.

Hasn’t he already used the back to basics call for the past few years? May as well get Ronnie Palmer back to do pushups and sits for training too.

Robbo hasnt had any squad in his 10 years get the basics right.Clearly its not a priority.

You misunderstood my post. I want to throw the “supporters” who have already written us off, off the gap.

We need to get Pearce on the phone ASAP and give him one more season in our colours.

Having a supposedly great coach of a star studded team like the Roosters claim he has to teach the players the basics of the game is pitiful.
If they don't know the basics by now we are wasting our time.
He's been coaching them for 10 years, he has had some of the best players in the game at his disposal, Maloney and SBW and Jennings won us the comp in 2013, Cronk , Keary, Teddy and Mitchell won us the comps in 2018 and 2019.
He talks about the length of the competition..... I don't think the number of games has changed significantly in the last 25 years.
I don't think Robinson is a guru, or even an outstanding coach..... he is about average. His win percentage is 63% so he doesn't win 2 out of 3, and with the facilities, and the personel he has had that's nothing special.
