They are doing research on tackling techniques and have stats saying players tackling up right ( the catch and hold tackles) are 3.2 times more likely to suffer concussions and taken from the fray.
Of course the narrow target zone for such tackles means there is little room for error or discretion when a ball carrier is struck in the head - arm bouncing off the shoulder or ball and hitting the ball carriers head or the ball carrier falling/slipping etc - it's the final impact.
It's all to do with this wrestling and judo nonsense that they should never have allowed to come into the game
I was watching a game from 2010 so not long ago and there was hardly any 3 defender tackles - mainly 2 and a lot of one on one tackles and in my mind a much better game- off loads / plenty ball movement /good defence /quick play the balls - unstructured play even.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Perhaps the most intriguing finding, however, was that the chance of a HIA for a tackler was 3.2 times greater when they were upright as opposed to when they were bent at the waist. This was because high tacklers were generally injured by head-to-head and head-to-shoulder impacts, while ball carriers were injured by head-to-head, head-to-arm and head-to-shoulder collisions.
The results, which are consistent with the findings in professional rugby, could point to a need to lower the target zone. Junior players are taught to tackle around the legs, but at NRL level players are coached to tackle high and lock up the arms of the ball carrier.
Gardner, dual international Timana Tahu and senior biomechanics lecturer Suzi Edwards from the University of Newcastle are working on an evidence-based approach to safer tackling techniques.
Tahu believes the cheek-to-cheek tackling technique taught by many coaches contributes to the spate of concussions.
“We have to go back to the drawing board and start looking at tackling techniques again,” Tahu said.
“You need to look at different variations that can help the sport.
“The players only know to tackle high because that is what the wrestling coaches have taught them. There needs to be more education on it.”

Look at Radley's kick pressure he put on Kelly for the first sin bin on Saturday night. He got to him in time as Kelly's kick only travelled 10 metres so it wasn't late.
They aren't allowed to hit the kickers legs and he got binned for the slightest of brushes to the head so why would you risk putting pressure on the kicker anymore.
Defence is going to become very passive and that goes against the fabric of the gladiatorial aspect of the sport

Radley and Crichton need to change their ways and be more responsible as senior players and especially with the injury toll as they are not only letting themselves down but also the team and club.
Both now repeat offenders with 3 similar offences (50 % loading for each ) and 1 non similar (20 % loading for each ) past 2 years and carryovers( 60 for Radley and 70 for Crichton ) - even a grade 1 charge -base points of 100 will put each out for 3 plus games.
I agree too, yes it has effected us but players need to be protected.
We can't sit back and whinge when Teddy and Friend get belted around the head and than complain when some of our own players go out and do the same thing.
They probably have gone overboard with the policing but thats better than not going far enough, I'm sure over time they will find a happy medium and get it right.

You would think that King Gonzo was part of PVL's concussion consulting team.

Radley has a choice though fix it or suffer the consequences - if he does a similar tackle again and grade - it's 7 matches with the loading's and carryovers - be rubbed out of the game like Les Boyd if that continues.

And what's wrong with off loads and moving the ball though as that would make for a better game instead of the over structured x amount of hit ups and out the back block and decoy rubbish- 110% with Sterlo in not liking the way the game is played - all this structured play and wrestling and judo nonsense.- may as well have 17 robots play instead.
Not sure how old you are but take a look at the Chooks sides for and against from 1974/75 in the links below- they played an expansive unstructured game with plenty of offloads and were not only a great attacking team but also a great defensive side as well and that was when it was the 5 metre rule.
Teams should be able to defend against offloads as they would defending their errors as after all they full time professionals and are well prepared with an abundance of coaches training them and all types of intel available on their opposition and how they play as individuals and as a team. No excuses.

If you were running the NRL & someone you respected & trusted said to you that the game will be sued if you dont introduce a no contact to head or neck rule what would you do?
Players will say we know the risks & are prepared to take the risk but later on when they are older they think different & if they are getting headaches or forgetting things they will want to be financially compensated.
I wish the NRL could introduce a waver like in boxing but they cant because when you sign up for boxing you know its about getting hit in the head but when you sign up to league you dont sign up to get hit in the head. I love the rough tough dirty stuff but unfortunately in todays society its not accepted.
I think the game can still remain hard but its just gonna be cleaner. You can be hit in the head & not get hurt but everyone has their own idea of what hurts someone else when they get hit in the head so thats why there has to be a blanket rule on the rule.

What was pleasing to hear when watching the Andrew Johns and Laurie Daley cup Grandfinals the Central Coach Roosters teams both won was the commentator praising the tackling techniques -around the legs and waist tackles - of all the 4 teams - refreshing to see proper tackling and very very few 3 defender tackles and the rubbish that goes on in the NRL - but as he said that will be all out the window once they start playing higher grades such as reggies and especially NRL though.Last edited by King Salvo; 05-26-2021, 07:33 PM.
