The club managed them pretty well, 2 football managers later and a dozen second chances, they discovered the problem was accepting what happened

Cool so that makes it ok, I'll tell that to the next patent I see after their kid has overdosed

Mayes Hastings Freeman Lam Wing and Pearce were my standouts pretty much in that order.
Freeman played 2 years for us, Wing was a great Rooster, but barely played halfback. I never saw Mayes play extensively (I was a country Roosters fan, and we only got the ABC games) but would accept him as up there.

I agree with Mayes, Hastings, Lam, Pearce. Roughly in that order.

          • Yes yes yes Pearcoff ya poodle pooper puncher...

Roosters play for Premierships not epic chokes.

The Myths legacy when he retired will be the biggest long term choker in origin history.
Most over-rated player in the NRL. I can't remember any big game where he stood out as a game breaker.
Imagine this doofus breaking Mini's all time games record for our club. Thank farg that won't happen.

It should be the subject of a thread and I was thinking the same this week re Easts top halves.

Out of your list I would take Junee as number one. He was scoring a hat trick of tries in one game when we were scraping the bottom of the barrel. Was only kept out of an Australian team by Billy Smith and that wouldn't have been the case had Junee played at St George.

Johnny Mayes for number two and how fortunate we were to have two great halves like that at the one time. It made watching the seconds a lot more interesting. Mayes was a great defender too. Hastings gets bronze and then Lam and Freeman. Although the last two offered more in attack, Hastings defence and consistency was his strong point. He always got the better of Raudonikis but didn't have the attack of Sterlo or Mortimer.

              • Signing Cronk and punting Pearce without payout is nothing short of the greatest off season move in NRL history. Even Wayne Bennett with the unlimited funds of the thoroughbreds hasn't been able to pull off something like this. Yeah there were some big scalps signed by different clubs during the super league war, but those were underwritten by Packer and Murdoch and don't really count.

I've not been Uncle Nick's biggest fan over the years, but goddamn when he gets it right, he swings for the fences.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out, Pearce. The very anti-thesis of a clutch player.

                  From today's DT;

"Pearce’s departure now gives the Roosters more than $1 million to spend in their 2018 salary cap. They have already snared Cronk and champion fullback James Tedesco.

The Daily Telegraph understand Robinson is keen to strengthen the centre and front-row positions.'

That sounds awfully similar to the mighty Chookpenners.

If Niko goes, what's that - another $400k. If the "Napa off to Parra" rumour is true we'll have over $2Mill to spend..........

Has Niko left already, or had his contract cancelled?

Not sure. But he's been done for illegal drug use twice now. He's as good as gone IMO.

Horrie won RLW player of the year in 1980, 1981 and 1982. That was an extraordinary achievement. He has to be first and daylight second.

                              Freeman was incredible for us.

I loved Lam but he had an inability to step up in big games for us.

My best memory of Lam was that field goal against Norths that kept us in the game. It led to a demolition job and Lam bagged a late try from memory.

No questioning Hastings week in week out consistency and best defensive half by far. Attack during many of the finals of the early 80's wasn't so great though. Outplayed here by the Sterlos and Mortimers. His best was our demolition of the Magpies...but then our best that day was Warnecke.
