It's interesting looking at Tupou's stats from the last 3 seasons. This year he is up on average running metres by about 10m on 2016, up by 30m on 2015. He's slightly down on average tackle breaks compared to both years, same for line breaks (although almost negligible). His tries are on track for what he got in 2015. Way up on 2016 (but he did miss a few games). Try assists are slightly up this year. His offloads are down on last year but way up on 2015. Tackle efficiency is slightly down on 2015, but much better than last year. He's already hit his 2 penalties conceded that he's kept it to in both '15 and '16. And his errors are actually way up this year on average. He's on 23 so far this year compared to a total of 25 last year from 6 more games. 2015 he hit 29 in 27 games. I can't find post contact metres across the 3 years but I'd say there is a significant difference in that this season (if you exclude line breaks). He looks to have put on an extra few kgs and worked on his timing in the tackle and that's meant he isn't able to be "caught" and driven back as easily.
I think really the biggest difference has been consistency. In both 2015 and 2016 he had periods where he looked like a beast but then equally long periods where he really struggled. This year he's just consistently done his job and carried us out of trouble.
