Its not bizarre at all

If you are going to spend a wad of money on a player then you don't want to sign somebody older than 23 so you are making sure they have plenty of good years left. Otherwise you end risking buying players who are going to be past it very quickly and therefore not value for money.

How old is Petero? How old is Lockyer? How old is Hindmarsh? Age does not matter if you are a champion player. SBW is a champion player. He's 25. He's got at least 7 years left in him.

The money they earn is on a yearly basis anyway.
