You still need quality players to win premierships.

Sure, we had a good core of young developed players in 2002. But we wouldn't have won without Freddy.
    This.

Last season we managed to make the grand final with a whole lot of luck, a Dally M winning season from Carney, a break out season from a couple of our young guys in SKD and Aubusson and just about vintage seasons from Mini and Ryles. This year Mini and Ryles look to be nothing more than fairly average first graders, Carney is sitting on the sidelines, SKD and Aubusson aren't playing that well and we don't need luck - we are playing that bad.

With our young squad, we put up a reasonable performance in periods last year and had a good - albeit lucky - run up to and through the finals until we came up against the real deal in the Dragons and then we got thumped. We were clearly outplayed and outclassed both in the Grand Final and through the first 6 rounds of this season against some very good sides. Hell, the Dragons last week barely got out of second and we still lost. Our youngsters can only do so much. You need stars. SBW is arguably the biggest star of the lot. There's a spot available for him at either lock or in the centres. And he creates his own luck. If he is available then sign him.

Oh. He has barely been injured playing Union. AND his contract is up at the end of the Rugby World Cup and apparently Souths and Parra are after him. We wouldn't want them to get him now would we? Bye Riddell, Mini, Ryles, Graham, Anasta and FPN. Hello SBW.

nd we shouldnt have lost 03 and 04 with him.

Just think... We could get rid of the aging and mostly crap stars in Ryles, Mini, Graham and Riddell at the end of this season, pick up SBW with that money, then backend his contract with the underperforming Anasta and the salary cap rise. By that stage Perrett should be getting the 8 year veteran discount, and Aubusson and Pearce should be doing the same in either 2013/14... Sign up Tomkins/Coote/Widdop/Locke and we are laughing. A team that looks like:

          1. Naughton/Tomkins/Coote/Widdop/Locke/Jesus/Thor/Ya Mum
          2. Carney
          3. SBW
          4. SKD
          5. Perrett

          6. Carney
          7. Pearce

          8. Conn
          9. Friend
          10. Kennedy
          11. Symonds
          12. Aubusson
          13. Myles

          14. Masoe
          15. Arona
          16. JWH
          17. Leilua

Sounds like a plan. I'll call his manager. You call Brian and someone else can call Schubert.

He was the difference in the end.

One player can be the difference between winning one or not though.

If we didn't have Freddy we would not have made one of the 4 grand finals in that 5 year period.

                Really.

Pound for pound, minute by minute, no Morley, No premiership in 2002.

If Mullins didn't play in the semi's we wouldn't have made the GF!

                    Rubbish Melon..

After Freddy retired we came in 9th(2005) and then 15th(2006) - only beating Souths..

Morley was still there in those years..

I was one of Morley's biggest fans too, but surely you don't believe what you wrote...

Morley gave us that hard edge that we needed for years.

Freddy was our best player and leader but Morley wasn't far behind him.

I believe what I saw. I also loved Freddy to bits. Bit i saw Freddy with a Golden Boot fail to deliver with players like Lam next to him. Yeah sure he had a groin injury.....blah blah....we choked more than the Dragons back then. Gould was also a reason and not the coach everyone here thinks he was. he was always out coached in the big games.

I also saw Freddy fail in 03 and 04. If it was just all Freddy we should have three-peated. It proves my point, one player, no matter how good, cant do it.

And in 02, If Morley doesnt smash Villa and lift the team, we dont win. Simple. Clear cut.

Mullins [not a rookie winger]...was part of the difference.

If Luke Phillips hadn't put his body on the line and batted that ball out...we would've been in trouble.

If Freddy hadn't kicked that 40/20...then urged the team forward.

Also If Morley, as stated above, hadn't smashed Villasanti.....

Not forgetting Freddy's pass to Wing and wing's try.

And not forgetting Mr Flannery, the master of scoring tries from anything, just when they were needed.
And Fitzy, Mini, Fletcher, Hegarty, Ricketson, Crocker, Hodges, Bonetti etc

A fine team effort:...a star team.

                            The bolded explains it all..

You are right Freddy failed in the GF's of 03 and 04 and that is why we didn't win them. Therefore without Freddy we were not good enough...

Freddy was the reason we won the premiership in 2002..

Freddy alone was not the reason. But back to SBW. He will never win us a title, unless its a Heavyweight boxing title.
