His ego needs no stroking by anyone, he does enough of that himself. He is his own biggest fan nowdays.
Keep him on the outer and see how he reacts over time. He will either walk away or fire up without any input from Smith if he really wants to prove himself.
Smith doesn't have the time to be wasting on putting effort into blokes like the Wanka. It's the young blokes that are the future of the Club and that's who he should be concentrating on.
