That offer was to go overseas,not for him to go to another NRL Club.If he was to go to another NRL club,his current contract amount plus that $100k would all be included in OUR salary cap for next season.We would also have to actually pay the shortfall in any other NRL contract he would hypothetically get,which would be more than 100k with his back-ended deal with us...

100K is also what the Rooster are hoping to only have to contribute towards making up the shortfall in any new contract for Mason, therefore only the 100K counting against the salary cap as I understand it.

that can only happen if a club picks him up for the exact amount of his current deal,which is $400k a year back ended.The 100k offer the telecrap sprouted is probably the backended amount.So another NRL club will have to pay him 400k next season for us to wear only 100k of it in our cap.The probability of this happening in the NRL is not looking likely,as most clubs do not have this cap room for next season,which is why he has been looking overseas.Even over their is looking shaky for him with limited offers given.His hope was Japanese Rugby,which currently is into round 10 of a 16 round competition.Next season would be more logical for that deal to come through,which will mean he will sit on his current contract and stay put with us in 2010....

If he leaves and no money is paid, then nothing applies to our salary cap. (not likely though).
The $100K that was mentioned by the telecrap was an enticement to sign somewhere else (outside the NRL), so that he would not need to find something equal to what he is on.

Which is why they've given him extended leave to trawl Japan and the UK in order to get a deal outside the NRL.

Not sure whether it will be successful though. I have the feeling the Roosters may be stuck with him for 2010.

It will be interesting to see what eventuates if that happens, as Smith never mentions him as being part of the team. Certainly he wasn't mentioned when Ryles was signed, Pea and Myles were named as the senior forwards, not a peep about the Wanka.

Count me in.Smith has got him doubting his worth now and Mason`s ego will be boiling over to prove him wrong.Give him one more year to prove his value to overseas clubs then spend his money this time next year on a quality centre...

Of course if he were playing with us next year, he would be playing for a new contract (most likely his last big contract) with whom ever ....so you'd think he'd want to impress all onlookers !

You're right. But there's nothing that says that Smith can't exact the ultimate revenge by making him the most expensive BlueBag ever to wear the Jets colours.

Smith showed in the Kirk Reynoldson drama that if he doesn't want a player in his team, for whatever reason, then they won't be there. He'll cop any backlash from supporters and players and do exactly as he pleases. He's never been one to crave popularity from anyone.

And I suspect no one 'from above' will interfere either.

the reynoldson thing was (disgracefully) done to save money, keeping Mason in reserve grade (should he regain form) costs money. If he does end up staying, shows a bit of commitment, pulls his head in, stays out of trouble, and is playing well, then he'll get a chance in first grade
