Originally posted by Thirteen View PostSouths and Melbourne are pretenders. Penrith are much weakened. This was our year!
Sure they lost Koroisau and Kikau - Luke is no slouch as player and neither is Sorenson and Garner when he was playing
They lose a bit in offense but certainly gain in D with Sorenson and Garner - D was not a strong suit of Kikau's - 81 missed tackles in 2022.
Defence is the cornerstone of Penrith's grind game as you can see below - when your conceding a touch more or less than 2 converted tries a game over a long period then you are going to be very hard to beat- Penrith still are above the other 16 teams - so up to other teams to improve not hope that Penrith drop their level
Average points conceded per game- 2020 - 11.90 - 20 game regular season - 18 wins
- 2021 - 11.91 - 21 wins
- 2022 - 13.75 - 20 wins
- 2023 - 11.36 - 11 games - 7 wins
I am still baffled how it's often said the Roosters have the best Roster/ squad but when you read the posts on here it's the opposite - named a 17 of players who posters either don't rate/ say they shouldn't be in the side or even at the club then the same one's on other posts bang on saying oh we have the best roster/ squad and why aren't they winning,
Baffling to say the least

All you need to look at is the stats in offense to know key players KPI's are down and the flow on affect that this has on other players when comparing the stats from 2022 to 2023 -11 games.
Some players are in different positions and are still learning their role and some are returning from long term injuries or disrupted pre-seasons which also plays a part.
You can fix your defence easier than you can fix your offense - If your so called spine are not creating the points and point scoring opportunities then naturally points will be hard to come by as others are reliant on them to do this.
Manu is one player outside the spine that can also create the points and point scoring opportunities as 2022 stats show if he gets decent ball that is which he wasn't getting so logically had to be moved to where he can get his hands on the ball
The Much maligned Butcher Brothers are certainly needed in the team for their D and especially when points are not forthcoming - both 80 minute players averaging near or over 40 tackles a game - Egan 38 and Nat 47.
Always amazes me that folk don't want them in the team as they apparently don't make the yardage they think they should but on the other hand they don't want Sitili seen as a yardage player in the team either because he misses too many tackles.
Some stats are incomplete as far as line breaks/line break assists go though but one would assume they are down as well in 2023 - if not in top 50 or recorded by the club they don't get recorded on the individual players stats - NRL Stats site
Keary
2022 (22 games ) - 22 try assists and 20 line break assists - 2 tries
2023 (11 games ) - 6 try assists and 7 line break assists - 5 tries
Tedesco
2022 ( 24 games ) - 12 Try assists - 17 line breaks and 14 line break assists - 13 tries
2023 (11 games ) - 4 try assists and 6 line breaks - 3 tries
Manu
2022 (23 games) - 12 try assists -13 line breaks and 15 line break assists - 11 tries
2023 ( 8 games ) - 1 try assist and 1 line break - 1 try
Walker
2022 ( 25 games ) - 16 try assists and 11 line break assists - 7 tries
2023 (6) games ) - 2 try assists and 2 line break assists - 1 try
A selection of other players - Line Breaks and Try assists 2022 and 2023
Toops
2022 - (22 games) - 20 Line Breaks and 2 try assists - 16 tries
2023 - (7 games) - 2 Line Breaks and 1 try assist - 3 tries
Suaalii
2022 - (19 games) - 16 Line Breaks and 2 try assists - 15 tries
2023 - (11 games ) - 3 Line Breaks and 2 try assists - 1 try
Crichton
2022 - (25 games) - 12 Line Breaks
2023 - ( 5 games ) - 1 Line Break
Sitili
2022 - ( 16 games) - 9 line Breaks - 7 tries ( 14 in 2021 from 25 games- 12 tries)
2023 - ( 5 games ) - 0 Line Breaks - 1 Try
Billy Smith
2022 - ( 7 games) - 1 line Break - 0 Tries
2023 - ( 3 games) - 2 Line Breaks - 1 Try assist - 0 Tries
You present these stats as if they are the cause of our demise when they simply are the effect
The fish rots from the head… this is a very poorly coached side these days

We have losses against the Cowboys, Dragons and Dolphins who all should have been easyish wins for us, we have been dominated against most stronger teams this year as well. I assure you Cronulla, Melbourne, Penrith and Souths are not afraid of coming up against the Roosters anymore but the roster we have should absolutely strike fear into all teams.

I've said it a few times now that as a previous elite athlete (and still a competitive runner who will finish in the top 10% of most marathons, parkruns...etc), sometimes the training, passion and effort's there but for some reason you flop.
IMO there's no guarantee that (for example) if you put the Dragons' interim coach in charge at Bondi or whoever else (say Todd Payten or Ivan Cleary) that we'd be doing any better.
There's flaws but Robbo's made the finals just about every year. Things could be MUCH worse!

Everything else we are mid field, missed tackles, errors, penalties conceded etc, but we are flattered in those compared to many because we have had two byes.
We were very lucky to beat Souths, and St George on Anzac Day, we really could be last on 3 wins.
Disgraceful state of affairs for our club.
Because the last 6 weeks he's played 1st grade he's been terrible..........wait hang on.

We lose SST pretty much but pick up Cheese & are arguablly supposedly stronger.
Better/ Smarter Coaching that tells me or just one of those bad years?

As a side note. Nathan Cleary looks no better than Pearce in a Blues jumper.

Robbo is the worst performing coach in the NRL this season… no one has done less with more… and he has a very good squad at his disposal… as he did last year
I wouldn’t necessarily say that anyone could do a better job presently… but I’m certain that no one could do worse
Robbo used to be cutting edge… but he’s gone soft in the head these last couple of years
If we go down to the Dogs I’ll be happy to provide you with a list of some of his most recent quotes that makes that abundantly clear
