Sometimes the betting industry gets it wrong. In 2016 Hillary was at a ridiculous price early on election day, from memory Trump got out to $6+ and within a few hours it swung quickly.
Yeah i made a tidy 5 figure sum on Betfair on the US 2020 by backing both Biden and Trump every time there price was over $3- and it fluctuated a lot in 48hrs. Love to say i had the smarts to figure out how it would go down but the truth is fortnight before the election i tuned into Jimmy Fallon show and Bernie Sanders talked about what was possible on election night and i just went with it. This was the interview that got me interested....

Back then, Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen, Premier of Queensland, decided he was going to run for PM and “save” Australia. His rogue “Joh for Canberra” crusade completely derailed the Coalition—splitting the Nationals and Liberals, confusing voters, and handing Bob Hawke’s Labor an easier path to victory. The result? Labor returned to power, and political historians still laugh about how Sir Joh accidentally helped the very party he despised.

Fast forward to 2025: enter Donald Trump—loud, polarising, and sticking his nose into Australian politics via social media and right-wing media circuits. His endorsements, rhetoric, and influence over fringe candidates might not have been as direct as Sir Joh’s campaign, but the effect feels eerily similar: fracturing the conservative message, pushing moderate voters away, and boosting Labor’s credibility by contrast.

Labor won't officially win because of Trump—but you’d have to admit, they'll probably send him a quiet thank-you text on election night.

Anyone else see the parallels? Or are we just seeing history with rose-coloured hindsight?
As you know i have a bit of fun with Trump on the other threads but i dont really care whether he tanks the US or not- as long as Australia can stay at arms length away from the madness that is happening around the world. We need to consolidate our trade agreements with our neighbours, especially China, and we also need to seek new trade partners so we are not too reliant on one country. That's just text book 101 in business.

I really dont think the "Trump factor" will play a part in any significant way in our election. For whatever stupid reason, he went full boar attacking Canada with the 51st state bs and calling their PM "governor" and insulting Canadians at every possible chance. Trump was the sole reason for the conservatives in Canada getting rolled-they were headed for a landslide win of record levels before Trump went on the attack. We dont share a border with the US like Canada does, we dont trade with the US at the level that Canada does and we didn't cop Trumps garbage barrage like Canada has.

The world going crazy isn't our fight. It was great though that China stopped buying beef from the US and gave the massive orders to Australian farmers- thats a win!

      • Surely the Australian people arent stupid enough to give Albanese another term in office. Over the last few years the standard of living is at all time lows , the cost of living has skyrocketed- the cost of groceries, building materials, power, health insurance and a multitude of other living costs are now off the scale whilst interest rates are at a all time high - which makes those people with mortgages (particularly 1st home owners) suffer because they cant even afford the interest bill. Interest rates in Australia are the highest in the world.
It wont get any better because the RBA will never drop interest rates whilst the free spending Labor party keep inflation rampant.
If you look at the exchange rate, the Aussie dollar is at an all time low, which means we pay huge amounts for imported products.
We are the laughing stock of the world.
How about Australian business, industry and manufacturing?
Non existant- and during my time I have seen businesses like Pacific Brands (Bonds and Sheridan) Toll Holdings (freight and Transport ) Dulux (Selleys, Dulux paint, Cabots) Sydney Airport, Goodman Fielder, David Jones , Sydney Ports & Logistics business, Mincor (nickel mining) all get taken over by foreign interests and taken off the ASX.
What does the government do to protect Australian business - nothing - sweet FA.
What about giving jobs to our youth?
        I know !!!!!
Why not employ another 40,000 public servants who do nothing but push pens all day and fill out newly invented forms?
Why not hagve a bit of nationalistic pride ?- build Australian and buy Australian and create jobs.
Why not impose a 100% tariff on Chinese cars - Chery, SSayong , Hyudais as well as BMW and Mercedes from Germany - f#ck 'em Id rather buy a Holden or Ford.
What about the power crisis - it makes sense to close our coal fired power stations, whist China has 750 of them operating.
Give yourselves a pat on the back ALP & Greens - you are saving the World.
Australia is one of the most blessed countries in the world - Iron Ore and Mineral deposits, and Gas reserves, unprecedented in volume compared to other countries.
Yet how does the government manage this windfall?
Complete mismanagement- as we as individuals are all heading to the poverty line.
How does that all stack up - yep, our dickhead leader has now created debt of trillions of dollars, despite the windfall at his disposal.
And even thats more amusing when you realise that Autralians are the highest taxed nation in the world- There are 125 Federal Taxes in place (GST is my favourite), as well as a huge array of ripoffs at state level = Land Tax, Stamp Duty being exorbitant, and the best.
How about security? Albanese goes over to China and kisses all their asses, in the name of trade relations.
All whist the Chinese send warships down under.
I know what they are doing - the Chinese plan is to protect Australia !!!!
Albanese doesn't deserve to be re-elected - he deserves to be locked up for treason against the Australian people.
All you lefties can go and get f*cked - the Eastern Suburbs and the Roosters area has always been right wing - so you really don't belong here
PS - hope the Trumet of Patriots make some inroads- to me , they make more sense than the major parties.

          • Article in the Tele about 'what went wrong' for Dutton. This is the one time I'll listen to that cr@p as they've already pulled out the knives and accepted their defeat. Love how no individual will accept responsibility... it's all 'the other guy' who cocked up.

            ---

James Campbell’s article, “Inside story of what went wrong with the Coalition’s campaign,” delves into the multifaceted challenges that plagued the Coalition’s 2025 federal election campaign, leading to its underwhelming performance.

            Key Issues Highlighted:
            1. Strategic Missteps and Messaging Failures: Despite early optimism, the Coalition’s campaign faltered due to a lack of coherent strategy and ineffective messaging. The party struggled to present a compelling alternative to Labor’s policies, particularly on critical issues like healthcare, education, and climate change. This failure to resonate with voters was exacerbated by an inability to effectively counter Labor’s narratives.
            2. Leadership and Image Challenges: Opposition Leader Peter Dutton faced difficulties in reshaping his public image. Although efforts were made to rebrand him, these were not supported by substantive policy offerings, leaving voters unconvinced. Labor capitalized on this by highlighting Dutton’s past record, especially his tenure as health minister, to question his suitability for leadership.
            3. Policy Timing and Clarity Issues: The Coalition’s decision to announce significant policies, such as the nuclear energy initiative, late in the campaign raised concerns about planning and transparency. The ambitious proposal to establish nuclear power plants by the mid-2030s was met with skepticism due to its late introduction and lack of detailed planning.
            4. Internal Discontent and Criticism: Prominent voices within the conservative media, including Ray Hadley, criticized the campaign’s execution, labeling it as lackluster and ineffective. Such internal dissent highlighted the broader dissatisfaction with the campaign’s direction and management.
            5. Reliance on Preference Flows: The Coalition’s strategy heavily depended on securing preference votes from minor parties like One Nation. However, shifts in voter sentiment and the unpredictable nature of preference flows made this approach risky and ultimately insufficient to bridge the gap with Labor.
In summary, Campbell’s analysis portrays a campaign hindered by strategic errors, leadership challenges, and a failure to connect with the electorate, culminating in one of the Coalition’s most disappointing performances in decades.

Oh honey, that’s quite the rant — but let’s bring some facts and clarity to the table.

First off: “Surely the Australian people aren’t stupid enough…”? Bold move starting with an insult to the electorate whose vote you’re trying to sway. Real persuasive.

Now, about this “all-time low standard of living” — let’s pump the brakes. Yes, cost of living is high, but it’s not unique to Australia. Global inflation, post-pandemic supply shocks, and international conflicts (hi, Ukraine and the Red Sea) have jacked up prices everywhere. Albanese didn’t wake up one day and say, “Let’s make lettuce $6.” Nice try though.

Interest rates? Set by the Reserve Bank. Independent. Not a Labor fever dream. In fact, those hikes were necessary to cool inflation — and spoiler alert: inflation is falling. Slowly, yes. But that’s how economics works, not like flicking a switch.

As for the exchange rate, claiming it’s at an “all time low” is just… wrong. It’s low-ish, sure, but we’ve seen worse (2001, anyone?). Besides, a weaker dollar helps Aussie exporters — you know, the people making money from all that iron ore and gas you mentioned.

And on those “foreign takeovers”? Many of those happened years ago under Coalition governments. Funny how the memory gets fuzzy when you’re frothing at the mouth. Maybe ask your mates at the LNP about that.

Public servants? Yes, they “push pens” — like those who keep your Medicare, Centrelink, tax returns, disaster relief and roads running. But please, tell us more about how they “do nothing.”

Also, slapping a 100% tariff on imports? That’s not economic nationalism, it’s just economic suicide. Enjoy your $80,000 Corolla and diplomatic meltdowns.

Finally, let’s leave the xenophobia and paranoid chest-beating at the door. This isn’t Sky After Dark. If you want to debate policy — great. But if you’re shouting about treason, warships, and punting the PM into jail for… governing? Well, maybe take a deep breath. Or five.

Australia’s challenges are real — but they need real solutions, not unhinged Facebook rage-posts wrapped in the flag.

Now, would you like a cuppa and a lie-down, or shall we talk tax reform?

Ha, certainly not. I pre polled on Wednesday and there were words and spats going on. I got smacked during the Voice campaign. This election seems more volatile than ever hearing what's happening at some booths, people are getting less and less tolerant of each other.

There have been some great victories for conservatives or common sense values against the polls recently - see the Voice referendum, and Donald Trumps whitewash in the US. If the polls/bookies are right, this one is headed in a different direction towards the activist left. And some of us dined out on these results, so we can expect our left leaning Chookpenners to get their fill this time.

Why did the polls change so much from February?
Interesting as Albanese himself is still hugely unpopular. But the Libs haven't been able to capitalise on this. Their strategists and advisors needed to keep the messages very simple and consistent, not fly with the latest thought bubble. The discourse that hurt them like wfh changes and cuts to the public service needed better marketing and clarity. The policies themselves were fine but without clear definition and boundaries, the left turned it into another scare campaign. Another thing that Labor has been able to do in the last few months is change the election from a referendum on Albanese and his 3 year performance to one on Peter Dutton. It was their only hope really. Then there have been the lies....its reached epidemic proportions in this campaign. Mediscare, nuclear energy, wfh/PS cuts and President Trump are topics where lying was made an art form by the Labour Party/Greens/Teals alliance. The other big factor has been the largely left leaning media. The pack of hounds that is the Canberra press gallery have just been relentless every day not being journalists but basically activists attacking Mr. Dutton. To his credit he has held his nerve and continued to prosecute his case for election. Then there's the nightly news grabs which are incredibly one-sided, and of course have some effect on those half paying attention.

                                The main issues for me
Social Cohesion/Immigration - the difference between our post war immigration to the post Whitlam years is crucial. The people that were welcomed into Australia pre 1970s came in more under a policy of assimilation where they loved their new country and worked hard to blend their own history and culture, but mainly embracing their new home. Now our immigration is based purely on multiculturalism with no expectation or education of making your new home and it's culture your priority. We have seen the fruits of this starkly in recent years. Our immigration levels are off the charts and our open door policy to Gazans while the rest of the world closed the door speaks for itself.

Defence/Security - The growing threats posed by Chinese and Russian powers are real. We desperately need a strong leader in these times, and Albanese has demonstrated in the last 3 years he is just not up to this task. He dodges, weaves and blatantly lies about issues on security. There will inevitably, in the not too distant future, be another conflict where we will be called to make some tough decisions. God help us.

Weakness and Lies - I know politicians over the years can almost all be accused of fiddling with the truth. But this bloke has taken it to a new level. Qualities of strength and integrity are what we desperately need in our leaders of today. And he is the exact opposite of that. Say what you like of Mr. Dutton be he clearly outranks Albo in these qualities. Yes, I know, it wouldn't be hard.

Energy Policy - the Left obsession with climate change and renewables reliance is killing our economy. The flow on effects of investment in renewable energy that is expensive and unreliable and the demonisation of our natural resources is dangerous and wasteful. The scare campaign on nuclear is mindless ideological rhetoric that is not shared by other countries using nuclear to power their nations. They don't call him Blackout Bowen for nothing. Spain says hi...got blacked out using 70% renewables in their grid, Albo wants ours to be at 83%. Candles at the ready.

                                Who wins?
It feels like we are headed towards minority government. Messy, scary. I think some independents/minors will pick up seats unexpectedly. I actually think Mr Dutton would make a very good PM for these times, but if he loses this election he may never get the chance.

                                The next 3 years
Turbulent. Whoever wins will need to face issues of terror/unrest, global conflicts and getting it right on energy policy.

Anyway, what happens will! If you're waiting till Saturday to cast your vote, enjoy your democracy sausage.

Jeez there must be some desperate advice seekers around. Let's have a closer look at how Dutts and the Libs blew this election in the eyes of reasonable people, not the meatheads, they, like Jax who is one actually, are still fantasising. The truth is that though the polls consistently showed barely more than 1% difference between Labor and the Coalition in two-party preferred terms, there was no shortage of commentators ready to consign Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to the ignominy of a one-term government. News, as usual, perpetrated that false illusion.

The Media has not been unfair to Dutts, his policy dumps, changes, the inconsistency and the egregious impracticality of his program has annoyed and frustrated the Media that has the job of making him look good.

Let's consider some of the devastating clangers. Remember that this is a political party seeking a mandate to determine our futures. Here's what really happened:

                                * This has been a campaign with only one real contender. At the heart of the Liberal Party’s shambolic campaign lies the one glaring problem from which all others inevitably followed – there were no policies. It is almost inexplicable that the Coalition, even with a three-year lead-in time could be so unprepared for a campaign, focused as it must be on policy alternatives and political possibilities for the future. And yet here we are. Last week senior despairing Libs complained that Dutts had presented little more than an aspirational booklet without the detailed policy work behind it.

*The Liberal’s work from home policy is the best example - no-one seems to have thought to consider how this might affect women in particular, and households, through the added cost of fuel for commuting and the lack of flexibility for those with children. It barely had time to settle in the public imagination before Dutton announced a major backflip and the policy was gone. The nuclear policy, another of Dutton’s “captain picks”, meanwhile, simply disappeared from view, rating just one mention in the budget reply speech and with Dutton refusing to visit any of the nominated nuclear sites.

                                * Touted by Dutton as the clean energy fix to bring energy prices down in 30 years time, perhaps. He also promised to compulsorily acquire land to build the reactors if needed “even if locals oppose it”, and to ignore community concerns, “in the national interest”. The groans of Coalition MPs watching their re-election prospects plummet could be heard across the country. What a political horror story. The nuclear fantasy fell just as hard and fast as it had emerged.

                                * These final train-wreck weeks have been almost painful to watch, the political persona of Dutton himself — his divisive, belligerent Trumpist attitude to government and, more concerningly, to the exercise of power — has become a drag on the Coalition vote with the final polls showing a decisive shift to Labor.

                                * Dutts and the Libs assumed too much huberis after manufacturing the NO vote, thinking, no doubt, that unpopular Parties lose government rather the opposition winning it. As always, they know that the sheeple have minimum interest and can always be relied upon to vote contrary to their own interests provided Murdoch can keep the "stories" and distractions coming as was the case in the "NO" campaign. He had, after all, previously got Abbott and Moron-son up without any policies. This time, however, a Trump - like strategy was quickly discredited by the man himself and, like the Canadian challenger, Dutts was left with no clothes.

                                * Another huge misjudgement was the nomination of the air head Jacinta "MAGA" Price as head of our own DOGE and his promise to slash 41,000 public service Canberra jobs and reverse the Albanese Government’s advances in renewable energy. Voters had already turned towards Albanese’s political approach and promise of stability and consistency, which some RW commentators saw only as “insipid”, “uninspiring” and “dull”. Albanese is a different political adversary now, having, unlike the "Born to Rule", prepared relentlessly, physically and politically. He has done the policy work and there have been minimal stumbles, greater clarity, and a remarkably disciplined presentation of a detailed policy program, including fronting the National Press Club several times which Dutton refused to do even during the campaign.

The contrast between the two campaigns could not have been more marked and Dutton didn't do well Jax and despite your glowing assessments, he's a goner!
