  • Cordner set to be named as co-captain???

    As reported by RLW ...

THE Sydney Roosters are set to appoint Boyd Cordner as co-captain in a move to get the star backrower to lead NSW into a bold new Origin era.

Cordner has been outstanding in recent years but has never led a tea, at senior level.

But that’s about to change with the Roosters set to name the 24-year-old co-captain with consistent hooker Jake Friend for 2017.

The Blues are on the lookout for a new skipper following Paul Gallen’s retirement from Origin.

“Boyd is a born leader on and off the paddock,” a Roosters source tells RLW.

“He has the maturity and the other players respect him.

“He’s a true Origin player in terms of toughness and attitude and he won’t let the Blues down.”

Laurie Daley has plenty of possible leaders to pick from.

Tigers skipper Aaron Woods will get plenty of support from NSWRL board members, as will veteran hooker Robbie Farah.

Penrith’s Matt Moylan is another contender, as are Josh Jackson (Bulldogs) and Wade Graham (Sharks).

But Cordner is being pushed by one of the most powerful men in rugby league, Roosters chairman and NSWRL board powerbroker Nick Politis, giving him a huge chance of landing the prestigious job.

The Roosters appointed Friend and halfback Mitchell Pearce as co-captains before the start of last season.

But that all went terribly wrong after Pearce was suspended for eight weeks before a ball was kicked after committing a lewd act with a dog that was caught on video and went viral.

Friend was given the job on his own – and his own form suffered as the Roosters had the season from hell.

But the club is hoping that Cordner, although young in terms of years, has the maturity to help Friend and the Roosters regain their mojo in 2017.

Cordner had an injury-plagued 2016, playing just 12 games, but has been outstanding in pre-season training for the upcoming campaign.

Excellent, should've happened sooner. It's amazing he's still only 24

Good news but I'd still love to see JWH in the role.

I see the logic regarding Origin

Cordner should be our Captain, & deserves to be

All respect to Jake but with the added responsibility the pressure seemed to affect his on field judgment last year

this Co captain thing although fashionable grates for me

What happened to Captain & vice Captain as in the good ole days

Cordner as co-captain or even sole captain is a no brainer.

The only negative is his constant injuries. Hopefully he's got some good karma moving forward.

Bullshit, Jake is not a Captains arsehole, Cordner should be the captain, end of story, once again Trent is failing to match up, when the big decisions need to be made.

Makes sense. Good for the team; good for Boyd; takes some pressure of Jake.

Cordner as Captain - big tick from me. Co captains? Hate the idea. Friend as vice-captain fine and he can step up when Cordners not there but I will never understand or want to know the need for two Captains. Why not have two coaches then? Yeah, that works well.

JWH as the skipper for my liking and Cordner as vice captain.
Time to move on from the Pearce and Friend co captaincy and petulant Friend as the sole captain.

Im going to go against the grain here, last year was a shocker and another captain be it cordner, fittler or anyone you wanna pick would make no difference, we might as well guve friend time to mature as a captain and with cords the transition is there if needed for 2018, im not a fan of co captains but both players will spend time off field so in that respect it makes sense, hopefully with a settled off season things are better this year.

I hate this co-captain crap, I just cant work out what is wrong with a captain & a vice captain. To me it is a weak option from the coach.
I believe the captain should be a player that is on the field for 80 minutes & in the Roosters case that bloke should be Pearce but congrats to Cordner.
