Was talking to my mate tonight who played against matterson and also played for our 20s. Doesn't rate matterson. Reckons he's exploded in size over the last year magically despite a broken leg. Haha he's a typical souths fan though.
Friends with a Souths fan? YUCK.
Find some new friends.

Think its fair to say that your friend is a terrible judge of talent

Bit unfair to say. My mate is a very good footballer himself. Matterson has only played two games with the chooks so I'll reserve any judgement. Some players look ordinary in reserves and juniors and then come into their own once they hit the big stage. Chris Lawrence is one such player from memory.

There always seem to be guys who can't make first grade talking about how hopeless such and such young player is #sourgrapes

Matterson played Junior Kangaroos and 20's Origin, he can't have been too ordinary in the juniors

Actually Lawrence came with big wraps he was an Aussie Schoolboy and playing first grade at 17, probably thinking of Brenton Lawrence.
Yeah Chris Lawrence was on a few televised Comm Bank games and they used to cream themselves over him
I played my whole juniors against him and he was never anything special. But he was always ear marked to go on. As soon as he made it to grade he excelled. It's like the jump was nothing to him.

Junior rep teams aren't always a good indicator of talent. A lot of them are filled with players who have developed physically much earlier than their peers. Their size and strength have them carve up their smaller opposition. Then when they get older and come up against men they have nothing. I'm not saying thats matterson as I've never seen him before this year.

Yeah like someone else mentioned some players are like that. I played a bit with Matt Geyer in my late teens and he was very steady, ended up being a very solid First Grader who could play any position in the backline ( granted behind an amazing pack at The Storm in that era)

Yeah usually only about 5 or 6 out of the 17 Aus schoolboys go on to play regular first grade/ rep footy, the rest end up being fringe or just disappear off the scene altogether.
