There is a half wit poorly socialised element in Oz that perpetuates itself. In the days of pay public phones, it was rare to find one functioning, likewise vulnerable train seats were slashed and otherwise destroyed. These days, transport windows are defaced with diamond cuts and meathead graffiti is ubiquitous. Indestructability at great taxpayer cost is seemingly the only deterrent. Talk about shit in your own nest. They're caned if caught with chewing gum in Singapore.

Though Left leaning, I have few problems with corporal punishment for anti social behaviour. Used to put the stick around a bit myself in the olden times.

Do you remember Paddo at the Cricket ground the stand that was on the Eastern side that had no seats?
When I was a kid my dad, pop & brother would sit in that stand, I think they transferred it to North Sydney oval.

Yeah. Was just concrete tiers wasn't it? Vandal proof. They knew how to counter it back in the day except for telephone boxes. The Sheridan had long wooden benches as did the fence seats. We didn't much go in for comfort because the seating wouldn't have lasted

Im pretty sure it was just made of wood, it was dirty but they could fit heaps of people into it.

Wood battens on concrete platforms? Never sat there nor on the fence, the perspective was too low especially for an oval but it was vandal proof.
I never tried to use a public phone at the SCG but vandalism did seem minimal in memory. Spray cans didn't exist for one thing but some individual (possibly of Red and Green persuasion but could have been a frustrated Rooster) had taken the trouble to bring brush and paint to the Paddo Hill turnstile area and daub, in uneven lettering, "Roosters to Die in Arse". It was there for yonks. Anyone remember it?

I would never have guessed you had a left leaning Comrade Paddo

It's an offence to "import" chewing gum in Singapore but like chewing gum it is not a caneable offence.

Selling it is a fine (100k USD) or a 2 year jail sentence - chewing it is a fine- 500-1000 USD and 2000 USD for repeat offenders

You can actually purchase chewing gum with a prescription in Singapore

I remember when long hair wasn't allowed in Singapore either - Ian Schubert had to cut his hair as they had a stop over in Singapore on the way back from the Rugby League World Cup in 1975

Led Zeppelin cancelled their concert in Singapore as they refused to cut their hair but the Bee Gees were allowed to play and were then driven to the airport straight after their performance

Pink Floyd come to mind when there is talk of caning - "Another Brick in the Wall "- Certainly a barbaric practice that should never be re-introduced

Forget Singapore, I remember when long hair wasn't allowed at Easts Leagues Club. Fairfax ( a former education colleague) wasn't allowed in. I think that there was a caning policy there as well. Unofficial of course - lift down to the basement.

I'll tell ya what's barbaric, having to warn some young goose a hundred times about disrupting and interfering with others' learning and him never getting the message. Mugs and lairs got belted in Paddo back in the day. No second chances.

I had mixed feelings about last Monday's 4 Corners' expose of rough treatment in juvie. All sympathy for the feral "kids" but nil for those who have to work with them and no criticism of the complete dereliction of parental responsibility.

Fairfax & Schubert weren't allowed in Easts Leagues because they had long hair. Apparently they used to get taken in through the back door of the club.
