  • The situation in Italy is tragic and like many when I hear 400 plus people died in one day you feel scared and sad.

    However...
    - 1600 people die in Italy each day, each year, virus or not, mostly aged persons.
    - 99% of deaths there from this virus had previous serious health issues.

The media/social media dialogue doesn't give that sort of perspective unfortunately.

        • Hmm so someone has stage 4 cancer and given 6-8 months to live by the oncologist with the support of palliative treatment. Then Coronavris comes along, they contract it and die within 1 week of respiratory failure. Personally if I'm hoping for up to 6 months more of life with my mother and she dies of complications due to Corona virus within a few weeks, I say coronavirus is the immediate cause of death. Yes the cancer will get her eventually, but the virus has put her into hospital and put immediate strain on the the health system when she could die peacefully at home in 6 months time.

I wonder how our population stats compare to Italy's in terms of age. I know we have an aging population but hopefully nowhere close to Italy's. The other thing I find alarming is the media's acceptance of China's figures. How on earth could we ever trust any statistics coming out of there?

          • Australia has approx 15% over 65 , Italy apparently approx 24% and I agree would rather have the oldies around but these are the stats they are putting out

            • It’s very hard to keep spirits up in this doom and gloom but apart from a few laughs watching people fight over toilet paper I’ve been replaying the grand final especially the last try and I find it so, so therapeutic.

They will manage to win crowd penalties even with no crowd.

                      • 2700 passengers were let off a cruise ship in Sydney yesterday without being tested or forcibly isolated and are wandering around the place.
                        A total outrage!

                        -----------

                        Separate from that:
                        PM said today:
"We've found that some people who were supposed to be self-isolating are out and about".
Seems the only way to make people do as they're told is to put them in camps in the outback.

                        "John is forcibly isolating".
                        Much better.

While its true that 90% of the Italian fatalities have been over the ages of 70 there is no way 99% of them had previous serious health issues- unless you call the natural deterioration of your body the older you get a serious health issue.

In Italy when the outbreak first occurred the Italian government didn't react and people went about their daily life per usual. They didn't foresee how bad the issue could get and by the time they did it was too late. The hospital systems collapsed, they had nowhere near enough medical supplies (like respirators) to cope with amount of people who were vulnerable- so preference was given to borderline cases.Absolutely many have died because they couldn't receive treatment. They appealed to the EU for emergency supplies but got nothing at all because the other countries knew they too would be hit hard and didn't want to deplete their own supplies. Only a few days ago it was China that answered a SOS from Italy and sent a specialised medical team of over 20 with all up 7 tonnes of medical supplies. The Italian people are very pissed at their government but also the EU- get ready for Italexit in a couple of years.

Compare the above to China who shut down the epicentre of the outbreak, built makeshift hospitals and had medical staff and equipment on hand- and thats why their death toll is less than Italys.

Here in Australia im most concerned about the schools being open. While the majority of the world has shut their schools we have left ours open because thats what Singapore has done with success. Only difference is in Singapore every childs temperature is taken when they arrive, halfway through the day and before they leave. Any raised temperature results in immediate isolation. They also have a rigid system social distancing, hand washing with ample supplies of hand wash, sanitisers and paper towels. We don't have any of that- i think the government wants to limp into the Easter Holidays and keep the workforce rolling for economic reasons- although they have stated they are concerned taking kids out of school will mean some in the health system would have to stay home to mind their kids instead of going to work.

Anyway the good news is we dont have Trump at the helm of our government. If our PM said half of the things about the CV that Trump had in the last 2 months we would have bought back death penalty and had him fried in the electric chair

Yeah its communism.....and the nonsense fear of it is making a resurgence. The lessons of the Vietnam war are slowly being forgotten.

I take and understand your point..........but I don't believe 100% the numbers ANY government give out.....least of all the USA. China was accused of secrecy about the outbreak of the CV and thats probably true-they tried to contain it in house which of course is despicable. However heres what the leader of the " free world" had to say....

Would you believe anything that comes from his mouth hereon?

It will be interesting to see which countries will be able to absorb the economic implications of the CV and stage a rebound....these are statistics that are a lot harder to fudge!
