Pandemics and plagues have been a constant throughout human history and we have always overcome them through isolation and starving the virus of hosts.
The quote the only thing we learn from history is that we learn nothing from history is apt as we quickly forget anything beyond a couple of generations.
If anything can be learnt from that video is we should be grateful we don't have a reality TV host running the country.

Trump and his MAGA hat were elected President by Americans to "take our country back" from such things.
They stand against & for whatever Rupert & Lachlan tells them to stand against & for.....and they have no shame to openly lie in the face of facts. I watch it ever now and then to remind myself how stupid & gullible Americans really are

Greetings all from the cesspool that is New York City - jeez it’s boring without live sport!

My wife and I have been isolating for more than a month now - we watch the NY Governor and Trump press conferences every day for news. Yes it’s true NY is finally seeing a significant drop in hospitalisations/ICU admissions..sadly though, part of that is a result of patients in those wards dying. That said, a lot is attributed to the social distancing guidelines which people are taking very seriously.

As for the politics - there’s a time and place to debate who was wrong - but I can tell you that as late as last month, NYC’s mayor was tweeting out that we should “get out on the town” because corona risk was low.

Well, we are paying the price now - we’ve never felt further away from home, which is why we’re hoping Aussies keep adhering to the guidelines. It works - it’s starting to work here and I urge you all to keep it up. There’s a reason Australia’s numbers are low - people are diligent. Keep it up and we get our footy back, don’t and there will likely be a second wave. Spanish flu stretched over 10 months - its second wave was the deadliest.

I don't have an issue with staying at home, as I have the internet, 1000s of hours of television and movies, and a shedload of books to read and re-read. I have savings and I'll likely go on the job keeper allowance if needed. The only thing I'm concerned about is that there's a sunset (or finite) clause on the police powers. Contrary to the belief television would give you, most people join the cops for the power trip.

    Jacinda Kate Laurell Ardern.

The second of two daughters born to a Mormon family, Ardern spent her first years in Murupara, a small town best known as a centre of Maori gang activity, where seeing “children without shoes on their feet or anything to eat for lunch” inspired her to eventually enter politics. Her father—a career law-enforcement officer who later (2014) became the New Zealand government’s high commissioner to the island of Niue—moved his family to Morrinsville, southeast of Aucklandon New Zealand’s North Island, where Ardern attended primary and secondary school. She matriculated to the University of Waikato in 1999.

In 2005 Ardern embarked on an “overseas experience,” an extended—usually working—trip to Britain, which is a traditional rite of passage for the children of New Zealand’s middle and upper class. Instead of labouring in a London pub or warehouse and then touring the Continent, however, Ardern worked for two and a half years in the cabinet office of British Prime Minister Tony Blair, serving as an associate director for Better Regulation Executive with the primary responsibility of improving the ways in which local authorities interact with small businesses. In 2007 she was elected president of the International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY), a position that took her to destinations such as Algeria, China, India, Israel, Jordan, and Lebanon.

In her maiden speech she called for the introduction of compulsory instruction in the Maori language in New Zealand schools and she castigated the New Zealand government for what she characterized as its “shameful” response to climate change.

Opposed to the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints' stand on homosexuality and same-sex marriage, Ardern became a lapsed Mormon.

Ardern bridled at media attention to her physical attractiveness, characterized herself as an “acceptable nerd,” and described her approach to life as “relentlessly positive.”[/I]

    Well there you go.
The Rt Hon Jacinda Kate Laurell Ardern, Prime Minister of New Zealand, elected as their leader by the good people of New Zealand.
New Zealand, our partner in ANZUS, and in the ANZAC legend.
She seems to be working for good not evil.
She seems to be the darling of the "climate change" brigade.

I would like her to be cool, calm, rational and measured in her manner, more "Prime Ministerial" if you like....less "castigating". Discussion behind closed doors would be better.

Australia should be sitting up and taking notice of what is happening there and in Europe, rather than contemplating relaxing our restrictions. I cannot believe we could be so careless and irresponsible. Unfortunately, as sad as it is, I think, realistically, it will take another 12 months at least to get over this. I don't think we can rest until a vaccine is discovered and rolled out.

Now the NRL is under fire from the Deputy Chief Medical Officer about re-launching the season. I hope they know what they are doing! Wayne Bennett and Ricky Stuart have both been called out as facing a significant risk if the season goes ahead. That is a big risk for the powers that be to accept. I am not sure that I would want to be them in this situation.
