  • Your ideal 1 and 6 for 2013

Now that we're resigned to having Braith and Mini for one more year I was wondering who everyone was looking towards for those two positions the year after. Offloading both and still having Carney's money in the bank should see us buy at least one high quality player and maybe a promising up and comer.

There's is no way it would happen but I'd love to see us move Pearce to 6 and go after Johnson. Then either go for Omar Slamankhiel or Evander Cummins as fullback.

More realistic though would be Dugan at 1 and probably try to develop our own 6 with so many contract upgrades due at the end of this year. Was a real shame the rumour re Carlos Tuimavave didn't come to fruition. He is a genuine superstar and it would have been great to get him cheap.

johnson is actually a 6 who can play 6 and 7 equally well so you would move jonhson to 6 and leave pearce at 7. your 2 suggestions for fullback i like but if that was the path we took (one of those 2 young guys) then id like to see that player running around for us in the 20s this year maybe with a game or two of first grade at some point if injuries permit. this will allow the coaching staff to fully assess their potential as a replacement for mini in 2013 and also allow them to settle into the club.

kevin locke or lachlan coote were always my ideal but both would be a little expensive/are unlikely to leave their current clubs. the choice is therefore gagai (best young fullback with first grade experience that is unlikely to get opportunities at least as a fullback at brisbane with hoffman and beale ahead of him) or one of the two youngsters (slaimankhel/cummins).

For 6, id like to see us sign a young player and turn them into something. mcgahan, tuimavave or stanley are the three best young 6s who wouldnt cost an arm and a leg like foran or johnson.

basically in friend and pearce we have an excellent scrumbase pairing and 2 players whose games are built around control, consistency and direction with dashes of class and finesse that make them capable of producing the odd individual effort. ideally, to complement them we need a 6 and 7 who play off the cuff like TC that will benefit from the space they are given by pearce and friend inside them.

We would be unbeatable. Imagine those guys with Pearce and Friend behind our pack. Wow!

PWN has been preaching it all year that Blake Lazarus should get a shot and I tend to agree with him. I know it's only NSW Cup but anyone who has gone to see him as I have would have seen a bit of DCE in the bloke. Very impressive footwork in tight spaces under pressure, can pull a try out of thin air and has a better and more varied kicking game than Pearce. Having Anasta there this year probably means barring injury Lazarus will never get the chance to play first grade in the RWB. But if Newtown were to re-sign him and we didn't go after a higher quality 6 then I'd put him in at 7 and play Pearce at 5/8. The difference in talent between Pearce and Foran is minuscule, it's just that Pearce is played as an out and out organiser. With his speed Pearce surely should be used in the same way as Foran, playing to the line out wide with deep runners forcing the defence to actually make decisions. If we are to sign a ball playing fullback like Dugan I can see his game moving towards that style as it did to less of a degree playing origin alongside Dugan this year.
