    Chook.
    Mini I agree.

Bwaith we can get away with as we have a stack of skillful second rowers that can fulfill the ball running aspect of a five-eighth, Bwaith's salary however is way overs for what he offers.

The turnaround in form from chumps to champs after Freddy took over, followed by the wooden spoon in 2009 when they didn't like Freddy any more, was an absolute disgrace. People like JT think they are fixing the problem by blaming the likes of Freddy, Mason, Carney, but in reality they are actually part of the problem by not accepting the team lacks professionalism and accountability. It is the typical loser mentality of blaming someone else for your problems.
Agree with this entirely, though Mason/Carney were bigs contributers to the systemic problems that exist. Attitude, accountability, respect, ownership, team culture, responsibility, ambition, work ethic - these are all of the things this club lacks.

From where I sit we are void of many of the things that makes champion teams and drives success. Talent is not the issue, because looking at our team on paper we have bucket-loads. I also don't subscribe to the theory that we need a one-in-a-generation halfback/five-eighth to win the comp - so many teams have gone without and come home with the premeirship (eg. Dragons 2010).

What we do need is a overall of whatever crap non-existent structures exist in our footballing department. I mean how is the leadership group working? To what degree do the coaches empower their players to take responsibility of their performance and behavior? Why do we have a deflection of blame mentality? Why is expectation the biggest impediment to our performance?

If Braith Anasta comes out and says 'how proud' he is of the teams end of the season performance I may have to throttle him. Taking pride out of inconsequential wins when the team has done shit all in the first half of the season (when it actually meant something) does not instill pride in me. In fact, all its done is made me more bitter and annoyed.

The thing is supporters don't necessarily want wins. Our injury list was huge and we do have a young list prone to fluctuations in performace. All we ever needed to be placated was effort and a show of genuine care. Sometimes watching them drop their heads, or let soft tries in when you just know they could have made a better effort of it is disheartening.

Here's a good comparison of what a team should be in my eyes. In the AFL the Swans have the most enviable culture that centered around team-values of accountability, teamwork and hardness. THe so-called 'Bloods' ethos is all about player empowerment. Discipline, training standards, performance, the club image is all driven by the leadership group and the players themselves. They also have a very good mentorship program so that all young players are guided by the leaders.

If they have an uncharacteristic loss, senior players will come out a publicly take responsibility and say that they were embarrassed. It is almost guaranteed that the next week the same mistakes won't happen again. This sort of standard has meant that they have been the most successful team for the past 15 years and despite the so-called 'bottoming-out' process every teams has to do, the Swans have only missed the finals twice in that period.

Most indicative of the strength of their culture is that when new players, young and only come into the team, they buy into it straight away. Standards are set and if you don't follow them consider yourself banished to the reserves and out the door.

There is a great speech one of the captains Jarrad McVeigh made at the Guernsey presentation Night at the start of this year. I will post it up when I find it, but that is the sort of culture of accountability and teamwork I can only dream the Roosters will find.

I've got to qualify this almighty rant by saying this team has more potential and has shown more depth of character than that pathetic 09 side. There's promise in them and I do believe Brian Smith is the right coach. Hopefully it is only onwards, and upwards from here.

      • Here you guys go. Jarrad's recently lost his baby daughter who was less than a month old. His courage and that of his teammates after that tragedy was inspiring.

        • The Dragons' win was tainted by the refereeing.

Great post Cindy. I understand Braith saying he is proud of the team over the past four weeks in the context of the crap Carney / Myles / FPN dragged the club through and I think he and the team have done well and deserve praise when you consider that stuff. But you're right, it needed to be that way from the start and I hope that will be the case in 2012.

What you don't understand is it was not his campaign at all, and yes I was disappointed that he didn't tell his manager to pull his head in.

And yes while not much of a feat, I am quite pleased he is better than Sutton.
