  • Very positive signs especially our defence both early in the game and thru the second half. I hope our poor completion and error rate improves yet our frantic upbeat style can be our own worst enemy. I was not overly impressed with Fergos involvement yet he did make some good tackles. Whipping boy Guerra performance seemed to steer the ship in the second half in leading the way in trying to settle the team and Liu minutes. Special mention to Matterson - some clowns here saying he is another Anasta in a deragotory sense. No faaarkin idea.

We are all entitled to our opinions and in mine he is very Anasta like, big body and doesn't like the hard yards hence why he saw himself as a half so he could give the ball to others to make the hard yards up the middle. But he's not agile or fast enough to be a quality half and his ball skills for a second rower are great but as a half were ordinary at best.

Personally I see Matterson's best postion as a lock so he can float either side and has the skills to excel in that position but he has to make the hard yards like a SBW could and use his ball playing skills from there, hit the line hard and be able to get the ball away.

Calling people clowns because they have a differing opinion to yourself kind of make you look like one in reality.

      • It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

        Well not quite but...

I think there was fatigue in that second half not so much from tackling but just being very difficult to maintain that level of speed, precision and intensity that we did in the first 40.

Plus guys like Cords and Pearce having first hitout for the year will be better for the run.

I would have brought Watson on during the second half...although not a Jake style machine defender he can still tackle and his speed around the ruck with the ball would have got us back on the front foot.

Many positives though incl Keary and Matterson as mentioned. Gordon did well. God forbid a fit looking Guerra even aimed up.

SKD and Toops can still win or lose you a game...nothings changed there.

We are going to have some fun this year.

          • That 40 mins could be a hidden blessing. If we had gone on with the job who would have known what sort of mindset we would go into this weeks game with. Added to that, the bookies would have had us overwhelming favourites. Robbo now has a reason to get the whip out and training and hopefully will ensure they are well and truly focused this week.

              • The best & worst in 80 mins......

We know their potential, it's all about the mentality & they have all season to work on it.

From fans POV it's very, very encouraging from a team 2nd last 2016.

I have been a harsh critic of Guerra & he stepped up late in the game & showed me he had a pair.

                Next week for improvements.....

Great to see Fergo, Toups, Guerra & Kane make solid contributions without the errors...................(ok, now imagine a smiley face emoticon)

Sorry bout that, forgot the Toups mistakes - though he was still great, topped the offloads by a mile, and keen to get involved - also assisted latrell twice....................

Toups must have been very very close to Jenko to miss him so much last year. Mmmmm........................lol

                      Agree 100%

He copped plenty on here during the off-season. Looks to have a bright future.

The second half was diabolical. Dumb play after dumb play with no respect for possession.

I wonder how the Storm or Cowboys captains would address the problem 'in game' if similar happened to them? I have no doubt Smith or Thurston would lay down the law and get them to pull their heads in. Respect possession.

I suppose my point is Friend and Cordner have gotta show stronger leadership in tough times. How many times did we make a break and instead of taking the tackle we throw a hail Mary. Time and time again they coughed it up.
Someone on the team has gotta stand up and enforce some discipline on the field. Robinson can't do it. And to be honest I don't think Jake Friend can either. I have no idea how Cordner is with the players, but Friend can't even put two words together in the press conference. It's painful.

Anyway this isn't a doom and gloom post. I'm happy to take the win and move on. But I think we need better leadership out there during tough times. Someone who is prepared to tell some hometruths to his team mates. Like I said tho, I don't think Friend is up to that.

And I'm not sure who in the team is to be honest.
There is that one player who some journos, pundits etc. have been saying that he is calmer now in mind and I think in the near future will mature into a player that could command that respect and have the control to get everyone on that page when things go awry. Not to do it on his own ala Thurston or Smith, but if he keeps working with Alan Bell and is our 7, I think Mitchell Pearce.

Also the Matterhorn rolled up his sleeves last night so I don't think he'll braith out on us. 1 run for 1 metre lol

                          • I noticed on the Roosters site, they have a Man of the Match Poll. Connor Watson was running 6th (2.57% of the votes) when I looked. Well done, Connor. Excellent bench warming skills.

I really believe this year he will develop into a key player for us.Up to him though.

                              • Plenty of positives, plus beating a finals fancy at home of who we don't have a great record against is good.
We have lost 3 out of last 4 Round 1 matches so I will take the points any which way.
Watson should have probably been sent out once we were 22-0 up to give Friend a rest but I think Robbo thought the dominance would continue in the second half and he could have thrown him on with about 20 to go with the match all wrapped up. The second half became pear shaped and Robbo didnt want to risk it.
