The airlines sure aren't missing their customers. Cost of a GC to Sydney return flight was $220 or something like that.
I checked what it would be like in a few weeks time and got a price of $59. Absolute rort.

All businesses do the same, and their entitled too. Anyone into Motorsport, particularly bathurst would know the incredible price rises charged for bathurst weekend. It's CRAZY! Mind you the bathurst 1000 is best wknd out. Hopefully this wknd tops it.

I understand that, best thing for the economy and businesses and all that official nonsense.
And yes I agree about Bathurst, but it is one helluva weekend.

How is the drive from the Gold Coast to Sydney? I'm thinking of leaving at 2-3am on Saturday morning and then heading back Monday arvo.

          Worth it?

I can rent a car plus insurance for $280. Fuel I assume will be $200 all up. So I am looking at $480 vs $700-$800 for flights return for 2 with Jetstar (red eye flights mind you).

Would I just be better to drive? The reason I am renting a car is I don't want to put 1700Ks on my car and I have a $220 car rental voucher I won at work.

Drive my man and take your time heading back. I used to drive Sydney to Tweed every year around Christmas time. It truly is God's country up the NSW coast.

definitely mate, it's a long drive, you'll have to throw in one or two quick breaks along the way but if you leave at say, 3, you should get here before 1, have a beer, chill in the city (or wherever) for a bit, get to the game, enjoy the win, probably go on a bender and then leave mid morning on Monday to get back in the evening.

Easy drive really and you save a tonne of cash. Do it in 10 hours but take your sweet time I'm pretty sure it's double demerits being a long weekend!
My old man and his best mate are doing the trip Friday morning. I would be with them but I was lucky enough to get free flights.

Well weigh up the options, I assume you have accommodation down here for the weekend. The flight, 1 hour in the air and getting to and from the airports.
Driving, about 10-12 hrs one way then the same coming back,Pacific hwy full of road works everywhere north of Port Macquarie, long weekend and driving back on Monday the end of school holidays so major delays expected, petrol around $1.50 + a litre.

hmmm, I think I would fly.
Don't get me wrong, I like the drive up the Pacific hwy to the border but would not be doing it over a major long weekend.

I've done the weekend return trip by car a few times mate, it's intense especially on a long weekend and when KB keeps you drinking all night. I spent years driving for a living so 10-12 hours isn't unusual for me.

Sun up and sunset are the killers. That's stop time IMO.

Petrol approx $200 is about right.

I know if we win and it was me, I wouldn't particularly want to (or be able) to drive any Monday in October.

As HH said the trip is one of the best road trips you will ever do. Rushed, squeezing a GF in, on a long weekend, that's gonna take a lot of the joy out of the whole event.

Mate we better get one up here next season, my only gripe this year, very disappointing. Maybe a conspiracy.

                      Enjoy the weekend.

You know another reason everything is so expensive this weekend, Sydney has the Navy Fleet thing and One Direction on. Hardly any accommodation. I'm going from Brisbane to Sydney, then Sydney to Gladstone and have 2 nights accommodation .... $1,300.

Huzzah! We found decently priced flights! With our $225 gift card we are only spending $320 return each. Red eye flights, but whatever. Honestly glad I'm not trekking down in the car.
