I never suggested the club should just sit around, nor did I ever suggest the club should persist with Mortimer.

Signing a kid from a NYC side who's going to struggle to crack grade in the coming years due to the players in front of him would've been the smart decision imo. Someone who more closely resembles the creative playmaker role than Maloney. If he develops like Sezer did for the Titans then great, if not then we chase on of the available options hard. Carney, Tomkins, Hayne or Thurston would all make us top 4 contenders without a doubt in my mind.

At the moment the only way I can see us challenging is if RTS gets a prolonged shot at fullback and turns into absolute freak in essentially what is only his first season.

Can you honestly say you believe this 'pro-active' thinking will make us premiership contenders? Because I truly believe a little more patience and thought would have.

      Agree BAW.
Maloney looks far better in a tricolours jersey than the unpalatable colours of the vermin.
At the 11th hour "the beave" turned his back on Rusty's desperate offer and delivered Maloney to us. Rusty & Mudguts are still pissed off about missing out on JM because although Sutton had an improved year at 5/8, they don't view him as a long term #6.

Spot on.. We don't even know if Tomkins is serious.. Remember the Paul brothers were always going to go to the NRL and would keep resigning with ESL clubs.. Any club who delays signing a player in the hope another player (who will be chased by 16 clubs) comes onto the market is going to be forever behind the 8 ball.

Thats' just plain stupid.. That would effectively mean we would have zero chance of a premiership in 2013. Do you think the club signed SBW for the hell of it? The club wants a premiership.. Buying some kid to play 5/8 is one of the most stupid things I have ever read here.. I am glad you are not part of the decision making process at the club.

He was proposing to buy a 5/8 who wasn't good enough to get a game elsewhere.. That isn't patience.. We have buckley's getting Tomkins..

I am coming from the perspective of patience is required in terms of buying players ie the LOD and trading off up and comers. You need to buy to add and compliment along with building the side with kids coming through.

Ofcourse the club wants a premiership, I just dont think the right players were on the market this season and they should have held off for another year. Maloney was a rushed decision because they thought they would be able to get an immediate release. Didn't surprise me in the least that after sitting on it for a while Smith started pondering whether to play him at fullback or not.

I have no doubt the club buys players with the intentions to win a comp, I just disagree with their methods in this instance.

You really believe if we picked up a kid like Sezer we'd be worse off?

                    Hi Rooster_6,

Signing a proven NRL first grade performer puts us in a much better position than signing a young man with little to no first grade experience with no chance of him ever holding down a long term position because we have an eye on a season or two down the road. That kind of signing is precisely sitting around waiting for something to happen. It is wasting a season or two for no reason when there is no guarantee that Sam Tomkins will either come to Australia let alone decide our club is the right move for his career.

All of the players you mention are for next year and our administrators had already wasted season 2012 what purpose is there in wasting season 2013 as well? What are our options for this season? Mitchell Pearce currently has a capable partner in the halves and this is a positive move.

We don't need a "creative" playmaker we need a balanced team to play like a team and onr that is disciplined on and off the field. Canterbury-Bankstown made the grand final with a very ordinary halves pairing along with an average rake.

Maloney is not exactly sitting on a massive salary. He is a proven performer. His defence is no worse than other halves his size.

He is a good leader on the field and by the looks of it a great character off the field.

Everyone is dismissing him for his poor season last year but he was in good company. The same kid who everyone is touting as the next big thing flopped barring some individual brilliance. Johnson was mostly unseen during games.

Maloney is a great improvement over what we had (so is a log). He will compliment Pearce well and I'm looking forward to him running off the forwards which IMO is his best attribute.

Overall it was a very astute buy considering what he brings for the money spent.

Johnson would have been the cherry to pick but not avail till next yr, we were desperate for a decent 5/8 this yr... be interesting to see how jim goes....my concern is he is too similaqr to pearce

You think so?? i rekon ennis had a great season, as much as i hate reynolds i think he had a great year too..keating while is average, played out of his skin....just because they're not big names doesn't mean they're ordinary.. why pay for packaging when home brand obviously does the same job?

Tomkins would have been a good buy 2 or 3 yrs ago. He showed promise then and wouldn't have cost much. Now he would cost 3-400,000 to get him here. Too much for us law abiding clubs. I can see the dogs, Riff and the broncs making a play for him. If Thurston re-signs with the cowboys I can see Gus throwing the cheque book his way. The broncs and the dogs with there shifty 3rd party deals would be in the best position to sign him.
I think he would be a stand out over here just my opinion though.
I'd still stick with Shek, can't wait to see his development in the coming years
