NRL England's Sam Tomkins eyes NRL contract

ENGLISH superstar Sam Tomkins has put Australian clubs on alert after making initial contact to discuss a switch to the NRL next season.

The Australian understands representatives acting for Tomkins - Super League's reigning Man of Steel - have begun sounding out clubs with a view to joining the NRL's English contingent in 2014.

Tomkins, who has been compared to Melbourne and Queensland custodian Billy Slater, is also in high demand from English rugby union, but it is understood his preference is to join fellow Brits James Graham, Gareth Widdop and Sam Burgess in Australia.

Sydney Roosters recruitment manager Peter O'Sullivan has no doubt the 23-year-old would be a star in the NRL.

"He's an NRL player every day of the week," O'Sullivan said.

"He's one of half a dozen players over there that you would want in the NRL. He's elite."

...Roosters fullback Anthony Minichiello is closer to the end of his career than the start, although the club has New Zealand youngster Roger Tuivasa-Sheck waiting in the wings.

Asked whether the Roosters could make a play for Tomkins, O'Sullivan said: "There will be 16 clubs interested in him. Right now we wouldn't be able to afford him."

Meanwhile, Wests Tigers fullback James Tedesco will make his return from a knee injury in the club's opening trial against Penrith in Bathurst on Saturday night.

Imagine the kerfuffle if we mangaged to get him, along with LOD and another year out of $BW, and the 2013 Premiership. Plus the 2014 premiership
    That would be awesome.

I'd imagine he'd follow McGuire to Souths.

Possibly. But I think Souffs are pretty happy with GI playing fullback

Or they play one of them at 5/8.

Remember GI has won a comp from 5/8, the two positions are very similar these days and Sutton is a gimp.

IMO this bloke Tomkins will end up another myth who keeps using the NRL as a bargaining tool to get more cash from RL and Yawnion in the UK. To come out here you have to be serious about taking a $$$ hit initially to prove yourself.

          The FlogPen .

          You know it makes sense.

I think Tomkins will be a sensation in NRL. A ready made ball playing fullback with speed. Clubs will pay a fortune to get him and it will be money well spent considering the lack of quality fullbacks on the market.

He's (Tomkins) actually a 5/8.....he'd replace the lump of wood called Sutton.

That's a scary thought actually.....he's about 100 times better than Sutton.

RTS will be better than Tomkins.

                Chook.

He's a star. One of the few Superleague backs who actually looks the goods in test matches. I remember one match where he made Inglis look like a rank amateur. If Pearce does leave or RTS fails to live up to his potential...

Well if that's the case then they should definitely go for him. I've been saying for years that Sutton is an average NSW Cup backrower!

This is what I meant when I said Maloney was a rushed signing and we should have held out for the right option.

Tomkins is one of the best players in the world & we should've held out for the right option. This guy has the flair and creativity we lack so badly. If he comes to the NRL he'll easily be considered one of the top 10 players in the game, this guy is a freak.

RTS deserves first crack at fullback though, he's freakishly talented in his own right and we need to persist with our youth policy.

The club can not sit around waiting for something to happen and allow yet another wasted season to go by in the hope that things would fall our way. Pro-active decision making was required and that is what was delivered. If we do not sign James Maloney and Sam Tomkins stays in the English League or even snubs our offer for another NRL club then what option would we have? Apart from an aging Johnathan Thurston and a been-there-done-that Todd Carney we are back to looking for unproven youngsters or the tried and failed duo of Daniel "Morts" Mortimer and Braith Anasta. James "Jim" Maloney was the correct signing.
