I reckon the rest of our season will hinge on a fit and firing Pearce. In the past I would never have said that but after his improvement this year it is finally true. He was in everything, and seems to have had a small shot of unpredictability/creativity into his game.
Exactly right.
Pearce is still probably at around 80% of an NRL player he still has the 20% to go. The best players dont peak till their around 26 more toward 27 & peak for 3 to 4 years.
... Continued his City VS Country form today I thought, took the line on, smart plays, smart kicks and probably played the best game I've ever seen him play.
Pearce will be a Rooster for life, incredible to think in his next contract he'll be eligible for the long service discount. He's still the fifth youngest halfback in the comp
I actually think Maloney could be the worst thing for Pearce. Both are great organsiers and both will demand a lot of ball, it's quite obvious that Pearce is good enough to play a traditional halfback role on both sides of the field imo. With Hayne playing a running role and leaving all the direction up to Pearce he dominated, again today we saw the same thing... Anasta only touched the ball 20 times compared to his usual 40-50 touches leaving Pearce to dominate.
Maloney would be wasted as a ball runner so it's inevitable that we'll go back to split halves despite the promising performance today.
I actually agree with your concern Rooster_6. What Pearce needs outside him, in my opinion, is a brilliant running 5/8th, who leaves all of the organising of the team up to Junior Jnr.
Pearce was outstanding yesterday, one of the best games I have seen from him. In fact, the Pearce on display yesterday, having seemingly FINALLY been given total control of the team, was a different Pearce from the one I have seen in the past.
Rather than playing second fiddle, this new Pearce was always hovering around, in close on both sides of the ruck, constantly directing the forwards or feeding the backline, and constantly troubling the St Merge defence.
Although he was first receiver and not dummy half, Pearce's direction of traffic around the middle yesterday even reminded me a little of the way Cameron Smith controls the Storm pack and indeed the Queensland SOO pack.
Unlike Smith, however, Pearce can also move out wider and throw nice cut-out or torpedo passes to the backline.
I hope we continue to see more of the halfback we had on display yesterday. Whether Maloney will prove a good signing or not remains to be seen, but for the rest of this year at least, we need the skipper to take a backseat role, and let Pearce run the show...

Yeh agree with everything you said, Pearcey's at his best when he plays direct.
As much as I still don't rate Mortimer as a better player than Anasta I just wonder if he'd be better for the balance of the team at the moment. Braith running game at 5/8 has deteriorated immensely and at the moment all he's offering is some good defence and a long kicking game that's under used. Mortimer's a strong defender and a great support player... so long as he doesn't get it in his head that he's a playmaker he'd probably offer more to the team.
He's a great support player but that's it, he's not going to create anything from his own individual brilliance like a Carney, Marshall or Johnson.
We don't need another organiser, we need someone who can create for us. SKD's the only one with any ability to play outside of a structure at the moment.

I think his presence alone will take pressure from Pearce. The opposition will know we will have another attacking option at least.
His kicking game also will relieve Pearce of being the only viable option in that department.
And his ability to back up players who have gone thru the line is something weve really lacked since Carntey decided he didn't want to man up last season.
Pace, a rarely used word these days in our squad.
Not a game breaker as such, but can break a game open with his pace and tenacity.
