  • Went to rainier deli in five dock on my way back to Canberra today, saw a few reviews in the papers about the hour long lines for their sandwiches. Anyway popped in, and waited about 25min before we were greeted by the owners behind the deli, told them to do two of their own creations, huge slabs of foccacia topped with heaps of prosciutto, then stracciattela cheese, tomatoes, artichokes and whatever else you want them to keep adding. These things are really big, we split one, and have the other one in the fridge for lunch tomorrow.

the guys behind the counter are great value too, $15 per sandwich and loaded with as much meat and toppings as you want, can’t go wrong if you don’t mind a bit of a wait.

I grew up in Russell Lea mil which shares the same post code as Five Dock, I walked the streets of Five Dock, Russell Lea & Drummoyne plenty in my mid & late teenage years, I played footy for Five Dock RSL.
We couldnt afford to buy a house with that post code so my wife & I had to buy a little further out in Concord.
When I was growing up there the Rizzo family had that deli & it used to pump next door to it was Isons cake shop that had the best pies in the world but they both sold out.
Im not on any social media so I was unaware that it has such a good name
I wish I knew you were going to be in Five Dock so I could have come & said hello.

            • Meatballs & Tomato Risoni Recipe

              1 Litre Vegetable stock
500g beef mince (lamb mince is tastier)
              1 clove garlic, crushed
              1 egg, lightly beaten
              1 cup dried breadcrumbs
              1 tbsp oil
              4 tbsp tomato paste
1/2 tsp rosemary dried or fresh
              1 1/2 cups risoni pasta
              2 ripe tomatoes, diced
              chopped parsley or basil (garnish)
              shaved parmesan, to serve

STEP 1Combine 1/2 cup stock with mince, garlic, egg & breadcrumbs. Roll into balls.
STEP 2Heat oil in a large frypan. Add meatballs & cook until browned all over. Pour over remaining stock, tomato paste & rosemary. Bring to the boil, reduce heat & cook, covered, for 10 mins, stirring occasionally.
STEP 3Stir in risoni & tomatoes. Cook for 8 mins, uncovered, stirring occasionally, or until pasta is al dente.
STEP 4Garnish with parsley & parmesan.

Note: You can also stir in peas, chopped zucchini or anything you like really when you are stirring in the risoni and the tomatoes. If you find the mixture is drying out and the risoni is still not cooked just add more hot liquid and stir.

Just a nice and easy going red there Crab, not out of place with a ragu, lamb shanks or osso bucco but also not one to feel guilty about opening just to have with pizza or spag bol.

                    • Prawn , tomato and chilli pasta. Got some nice prawns but also wanted to throw in some black mussels but the local fish place didn't have any loose and bugger if i was going to by buy a kilo bag just to have a few in the sauce. May re think the tomato side as i have some nice artichoke oil and do the prawns in that with either capers or lemon zest and garlic, will decide later.

                      • Saturday night was chicken meatballs with a tomato sauce and cheese and green onion topping. Last night was roast beef and vegetables. Tonight is curried sausages. Tomorrow night will be forever connected to the demise of the original food thread. But I’m attempting to make them again and hopefully I can stop the garlic butter from leaking this time.

                              • Well dinner was a success except for the fact the garlic butter leaked out again. I put each chicken breast in a little foil boat which captured the buttery goodness so I could pour it over the chicken when serving. Still I’m not sure if it’s really worth all the effort I have to go through to make them. I noticed our local butcher now sells them but they cost $8.50 each. Not a cheap meal at all if you have four mouths to feed.
