  • SST/JWH replacement

As far as we’ve heard SST is off to Catalans in 2023 and JWH contract ends in 2023, so who would you like to see as a possible replacement.
The names that are speculated to be on the market are:
Taumololo ? Not happy at NQ and may seek a release
Haas? Lots of speculation about his future
Tapine? Contract ends same time as JWH?

Whilst we have a good crop of young forwards coming through the grades, and have B Smith coming next year. I wouldn’t mind Tapine at a bargain price as the other 2 will demand big money, and it doesn’t make good sense to spend too much on a middle forward that plays 30-45 minutes a game .

    thoughts?

Why not go after the best prop in the game and the guy who will be the best prop for the next decade.

    Payne Haas.

Payne Haas is the big fish. He fits Uncle Nick's profile for big name recruits.

I also believe Payne is a Muslim and close to SBW/Khoder? If they have his ear we'd have to be a very strong chance.

Otherwise Stefano Utoikamanu comes off contract at the same time as JWH and is a star in the making.

Only I legitimately feel for the Tigers right now and it's cruel to continually pick the eyes out of their squad. Reality is though someone will do it so might as well be us.

I’d like to see the development Tuku who is a giant of a bloke & Suluka-Fifita over the next 2 seasons. They both could be the next JWH & SST.

Agreed but if we had to pick from outside it would have to be Haas. I believe we were linked to Tapine a while back but it didn’t happen and tbh, I’m glad it didn’t. I’ve always been a fan of his however I’m starting to see him as lazy on the field with a lot more potential than effort and results. Maybe he is just disinterested at the Faiders?

It's a bit of a tricky one because if we do go after someone like Haas or even Taumalolo for a few years, they'd attract money around $700k+ per season which is big money. Is that coin worth a player like Haas ? definitely ! ... Taumalolo ? maybe not that much.

We've got a lot of talented young lads coming thru such as: Daniel Suluka-Fifita, Tuku Hau Tapuha, Naufahu Whyte, Alex Leapai Jnr, Xavier and De La Salle Va’a and add to that as well the likes of Renouf Atoni and Terrell May, so do we throw the bank at a well-known prop in the game which may hurt us money-wise going after players to fill other positions down the track such as backs etc or do we back one if not all of our young up and comers already in our system ?

It is a bit of a worry, but I'm trusting Nick and Robbo are across this.

Hopefully we won't need to go into the market as we have some very promising youngsters as mentioned plus the Vaa brothers and Alex Leapai all have looked promising in the few games I have seen them play.

                      No SST or JWH
Then it would be Collins & Baker followed by Suluka-Fifita & Ben Thomas followed by Tuku & Atoni then like DP said you then have Va'a brothers & Terrell May who was the surprise packet in the trials.
Are any of them better than Hass? NO.
Collins & Baker wouldnt compare to Collins & Hass but if Suluka-Fifita or Tuku stepped up then I think the Chooks have enough props to avoid going into the market.
I wanna see the Chooks develop players like they have been & have faith in their development system rather than buying established first graders from other teams but I do realise that you have to sometimes go & out & buy the best player for a certain position.

I'd like to see Baker develop. He has ability I reckon

I don't like the idea of paying open market prices for top end props.

Much rather look to pick up a cheapie or develop our own. Robinson has never had to spend in this area and I don't see him starting now.

If we are going to spend it will be on a winger or a 2nd rower IMO. But I don't see either happening, Brandon Smith will be our only big businesss.

Lets be honest, All those up and comer forwards showed bugger all in the trials so I doubt we’ll see anyone have a break out season in 2022. Next season? Well lets wait and see.

Terrell May was very good in the trials, I dont know if he will ever make FG but he was good in the trials & so was Suluka-Fifita. Given time who knows how Tuku, Thomas & Atoni will go.
