  • worrying stat

according to the nrl website the top 5 leading missed tackles this season so far are: james maloney with 31, kane elgey with 23, mitchell moses with 19, ashley taylor with 18 all these players are in the halves so its not unexpected to see them in the most missed tackles column except that rounding out the top 5 list on nrl.com is dylan napa with 18 missed tackles and having a look at his games so far he has missed 5 tackles in round one missed 3 tackles in round two missed 4 tackles in round three and missed 6 tackles in round four he is by far our worst offended with pearce at second with 11 missed tackles keary at third with 9 missed tackles which is to be expected from those two then guerra and cordner with 8 missed tackles and for comparison lsaac liu has 1 missed tackle connor watson has 0 missed tackles zane tetevano has 2 missed tackles jarred hargeaves has 6 missed tackles

napa needs to pull this stat in and do better

so much for napas defence being good he's turnstile I can only imagine the uproar if Ferguson dowall or tupou were missing 5 tackles a game his front row partner is missing a third of the tackles he is missing

Why? If it's an accurate stat then it's more of a thick hard cable than a dribbley sprayer.

Napa always looks for the big hit which is susceptible to a little bit of footwork.

Perhaps he could be a little bit more efficient but he's still a fearsome hitter in D that the oppositon look to avoid.

The likes of Smith and McCullogh hardly ever miss tackles because hard running props don't try to avoid them because they don't hit hard. They also flop in as 3rd man a lot to be a marker defender. This inflates their tackle efficiency.

Look beyond the stats and watch the game. Napa is a defensive weapon, no doubt.

I just worry about coming up against a coach smart enough to tell his team to aim most of their attack to the Manu/SKD side of the field, then we will seriously have to worry about missed tackles..

We have some things to work on, but I suggest Napa's defence is not one of them. "Missed tackles" statistics as raw data don't really tell you very much. You need to know the context surrounding those missed tackles. Did they occur when defending on our line? Did they occur in the final few minutes when the game was over? Do they include occasions when he launches himself at an opponent who is already safely held by a team mate? There are significant missed tackles, insignificant missed tackles, and lots of grey areas between those two extremes. It's a bit like saying a horse has had 5 starts on wet tracks and has never won so, therefore, the horse doesn't handle wet tracks. Nonsense. You need to examine the context. Was the horse in the market or an outsider when it failed on those wet tracks? If it was in the market on each occasion, then you might have some grounds for saying the horse doesn't like rain affected going. But if it was 20/1 or worse when it failed, well, that doesn't really tell you anything about its ability to run in the wet, because it wasn't entitled to run well.

It's very easy to draw A to B equations, but it's seldom that straight forward.

              I wouldn't be worrying about Dylan's defence.

The stat does not take into consideration that Napa tries to come up with a big hit a lot, thereby inspiring the team. These can miss, or the player stumbles through the tackle off balance, only to be tackled by others.

Dogs kicked at SKD all night. He threw a dud pass in a tackle but he didn't drop any of their kicks.

Napas missed tackles stat is not as worrying as his lack of speed highlighted by teams quick line defence. It takes him 2 -3 metres to get his motor running

Actually Boogie is onto something here. I see the stats from the games and I am very surprised how many missed tackles there are in the first grade games.
Teams are making an average of 28 missed tackles in a game, thats 56 total in a game !!!

                            Very poor for first grade

tbh Napa has largely been poor this season and you can throw in most of last season too.

especially given his game has always focused on D.
