Hastings has been playing the far more difficult role all season. There's a huge difference between being the organiser who has 60 touches of the ball a game and being a support half who touches the ball 20-30 times a game. I don't think he's done a good job at it by any means but for a 20 year old who's got barely a dozen first grade games as a starting half he's done some extremely good things.
He deserves first crack playing besides Pearce in a role that will just allow him to play his natural game and develop his skills.
The knee jerk reaction would be to discard Hastings now after he's spent the last 2 months filling in to a role far beyond his experience & knowledge at the elite level.

I wasn't suggesting otherwise. Just saying that I can see Matterson turning into a ball-playing lock and replacing Guerra at some stage. Guerra will be 30yo when his contract expires end of next year.
If nothing changes the results remain the same. 8 rounds in and there was nothing in todays performance to say we have improved any over this time.
The effort has been there over the last few weeks. When SST and JWH come back we will have the best forward pack in the comp, and Pearce back to organise them. It will be touch and go to make the 8 from here but much like the latter part of 2007 I bet we are going to enjoy the ride.

Not sure what you are saying?
This is what changed for me today;
1. A 193cm, 100kg five eight with a very tidy kicking game.
2. Toups wasn't missed at all. Burgess and Elliott gave me so much more confidence.
3. Boyd's back and was easily our best forward which really is to the shame of the rest of the forwards.
What hasnt changed.
1. So many unforced errors. Latrell looking at you.
2. Stupid tackles. Moa, Evans, Napa, Blue Lagoon.
3. Jake is just terribly out of form.

I hardly see adding 3 players to the team as evidence the rest of the side have learnt any or are in the process of since the start of the season. You make some key observations above, only I think we might differ on how much weight of importance each deserves...

As did I and I've been one of his biggest critics this year, apart from one really frustrating error early in a tackle count when we were attacking their line he was really strong.
No coincidence in coincided with his move back to lock forward. I think playing in the middle just really simplifies his game, he knows all he has to do is run hard which is what he's best at. There's no pressure to try and create something, or run lines for his half just run hard & he's not getting in the way our outside backs.
Keeping him at lock does mess with the balance of the team a little considering Liu & Taukeiaho do such a brilliant job of sharing the role but I think at full strength when all forwards are back on deck Guerra just leaped ahead of Evans as the man who misses out.
8. JWH
10. Napa
11. Cordner
12. Aubusson
13. Guerra
I liked Matterson and Watson.
I also liked Skids and Fergo in the centres and Elliott and Burgess on the wings.
Add Taukiaho, Liu, JWH, and Pearce to that team today and I'll be even happier....
I thought his kicking game was brilliant and overall was great. I would actually like to see him keep his place in the side and drop hastings to the bench for pearce.
