  • Logo change

Hi guys - I'm new here, but some of you have probably seen my over at LU.

I noticed some comments on our fan gear on some of the other threads, and wanted to see what most Easts fans here thought about our logo and name in general.

I've personally never warmed to the logo changes made since the 90s and have never liked our current logo in particular. On the merchandising side, it's nice to see an increasingly consistent embrace of the old 80s era rooster and I wonder if that might be heralding a return of sorts.

I thought it was a great move by the Bulldogs and Pathers to update their logos in a way that was both modern and giving a strong nod to the past (particularly with the dogs) and wondered how many Roosters fans would support us doing something similar.

I also like the idea of us calling ourselves 'East Sydney' as opposed to just Sydney. The rebrand never worked - we all still chant "Easts" at games and few people out in the west, south or north have ever embraced us (in fact we get more fans in NZ - which of course is about as far east as it gets :P) .

What do you all think? I thought that graphic designer over at LU 'Gaz' did a good job a while back with his proposed compromise design, but I'd like to see something that incorporates a bit more of the new, rather than one that's almost completely a return to the 80s logo. Perhaps the 2014 membership drive logo with the head from our current one?

    What do you all think?

I don't ever think that the name change was done to try and capture fans in the west. I think it was dont to capture the corporate dollar.

I love our current logo. It's fully sick man.

I would love to be called Easts Roosters (get rid of the Eastern Suburbs part, because it is has too much baggage, too exclusive etc), but it will never happen.

There would have been a thousand threads regarding the name change on the previous Wall.

Is there evidence it worked? I'd have thought corporate dollars are attached to the size of one's fan base...

Fair enough - as I said, I'm new here and didn't spot them. I raise it more because there has been something of a trend of returning to roots for many clubs: Sharks, Eels, Dogs, Panthers - all gone to either old logos or modern homages to old logos.

On the whole I reckon all those changes have been positive, and do think our Fog-Horn-Leg-Horn logo looks a little tacky...

Your logo is a thousand times better than what we have. The traditional two dimensional logo, with a bit of a refresh. Works for me.

East Sydney is a bit weird, given that it's a very small suburb next to Darlinghurst.

I think we should just be called Easts.

'Sydney' Roosters is such a fake ass name.

              A new theme song
              More penalties
              Better food at Allianz
Souffs to fark off to China.
Rabs to retire and to be continually pecked on the head whilst playing golf
              Rog to renege
A new blow up doll with club colours that don't fade in the sun.

Great thread. I hope you spend more time on the forum.
I want 'EASTS' and I want the old fashioned logo.
I can understand from a marketing perspective why they changed us to Sydney though.

The Logo we have is a tough looking Rooster and should be left alone (it is good to see our old Rooster logo on our merchandise as well, perfect combination).

As far as the Sydney Roosters name goes, well that covers our fan base in general of people who come from the Sydney area, which incorporates North, South, East and West. My Father grew up in Paddington but we now live out West, and I believe no-one fly’s the colours of the Mighty Red, White and Blue as much as I. Just leave what is not broken.

On a separate note the Home Jersey should never be touched, that is our proud history.

Being named Sydney Roosters has helped us survive long term. Since the name change we have been a powerhouse.

It's about marketing for the whole of Sydney as opposed to just the eastern suburbs, where the demographics have changed dramatically over the past couple of decades.

Born and bred in the eastern suburbs.

I've got no idea whether there is evidence that it worked but if I'm a company based in Sydney but out at Parramatta there is less likelihood of me aligning myself with a team calling itself Eastern Suburbs

Well I don't think we should return to "Eastern Suburbs," but rather a compromised like "East Sydney" or (given the point raised above) "Eastern Sydney."

I would note that a few sides got rid of their geographical markers altogether, and some have come back to them after realising it doesn't make much difference to their sponsorship. Heck, how many Aussie EPL bandwagoning soccer fans have any clue where places like Chelsea or Manchester are? Not too many... doesn't seem to bother them.

But has it really? I've read this before, but no one has ever explained how it has really helped in any material sense. How do you quantify it? Are there examples of sponsors signing on because of the "Sydney" rebrand? As for fans, if you look at the map of fans over the city, it seems pretty concentrated in the East despite the change, whilst Souths fans seem to have spread further despite their geographical marker: http://i.imgur.com/322l7D4.jpg
