You can. Get solar and take advantage of the long hot days enabling you to run your AC 24/7 without blowing the budget.

I have ducted and isolate the bedroom keeping it at 23 all night.

    Good sleep is so important!

I actually got my first solar quote today. A second company is coming next week. I think it has the potential to work well in summer when we have lots of sun and a north facing roof. I don’t think it will be as effective in winter though as Canberra has short winter days and often limited sun with it lower in the sky and some foggy, cloudy starts. I also use the heater more at night and first thing in the morning when there’s zero or not very strong sun.

Yes they’re less effective in winter. Our feed in is reduced by about 30% through winter. Store your clothes and wash them all in summer.

              Nice one.

It’s currently raining on the south coast. I didn’t see that coming!

              • Apparently it reached a record 43.5 in Tuggeranong on Wednesday. Another 40 expected today. It feels more like Dubbo than Canberra at the moment. I’m worried about some of the plants in our garden being able to survive this sort of sustained heat. ‘Interesting’ times.

Pump the water and they'll be fine!

Trust me I am, but it’s not as simple as that.

                      • It peaked at 41 today and still sitting at 40. The Canberra climate has certainly changed since I first moved here in 1984. Back in the 80’s early nineties we’d get about 3 days a year in Jan / Feb when it would hit about 35-37 and we’d all complain about the heat wave. Sometime in the 90s we hit 40 for the first time in 25 years and only the 4th time since records started. We didn’t have AC back then and it was very unpleasant. Everyone in Canberra was encouraged to buy evaporative AC as it worked best in our drier so called temperate climate. Then in the 00’s the number of 40+ days jumped to about 30 and the 10s it was even more again. Evaporative AC isn’t as effective anymore so we’re all switching over to RCAC.

There it is my Canberra weather history lesson on a Saturday afternoon. What more could you want lol.

                          • Much cooler on the south coast today after it pissed down last night followed by a southerly change.

                              • Still waiting for that change here. It’s supposed to hit in the evening some time. It got to about 30 today so not as bad as the past week of 40’s but the winds are still northerly and I had to put the aircon back on at 1pm as the house was still too hot even with the windows opened. Hopefully when the easterly blows through I can turn it off and open all the windows again. It’s supposed to get down to 8 tonight so I know it’s coming thank God. Just a matter of when. It doesn’t look like we’re going to get any rain however, but we really, really need it.
