Haha..they were champions. When WSC started the teams would play games in regional areas. I remember Dad taking me and my siblings to a couple of games in Orange over a few years. I loved it. We went around and got lots of autographs from the players. I still have the scoresheets with those signatures on it today somewhere in a drawer. I got big bird Joel Garner, Holding and some other Windies players. Also Greigy from one year as he captained the World 11 team and some of the Australia B team with Maxy Walker and Trevor Chappell. They were fun times. Good memories.

That would have been great. Max Walker was a real character and a favourite of mine. Poor Trevor Chappell, he will always be remembered for the under arm ball but i will always blame Greg Chappell for that, i don't think Trevor wanted to bowl it and Rodney Marsh yelled out to Greg, don't do it.Originally posted by mightyrooster View Post

A couple of other things i remember from the test match in 1982 was Bruce Laird taking a diving catch and taking a lot of skin off his elbow and also John Dyson making a century and was not out at the end of the game. Bruce Yardley got man of the match when he cleaned up the West Indies in the 2nd innings.

hard to compare teams from different eras but no one would deny that the windies teams of those years were as good as any. even so, the australian cricket team has the wood over the west indies cricket team in the last 50 years. they were undefeated v us for 8 series but they haven't beaten us in the last 14. they've only won one test v us in the last 20 years.Originally posted by 007 View Post
The West Indies were undefeated in a test series for 15 years (1980 - 1995). In my opinion, the best cricket team I have ever seen in both Test and 50/50 formats.
Once Australia can go 15 years without losing a Test series, then you may have something to brag about.
Quite simply, the West Indies from the late 70's to the mid 90's would absolutely demolish this current Australian line up of ego maniacs.

west indies cricket is a case in point. they've lost that successful culture. i don't know if it's proximity to the u.s. and it's basketball and baseball or something else but a winning culture is something you can't take for granted, you've got to foster it.

The big dollars in US sports and scholarships in general is killing Windies cricket.Originally posted by caz View Post

I’ll never forget that underarm debacle. The one thing I remember about John Dyson was that soccer goalie style catch in the outfield. I don’t remember the Yardley game but I remember Bob Holland ripping through the windies, I think, one year. And Peter WHO Taylor. Remember him?Originally posted by horrie hastings View Post

Yes Bob Holland was a few years later when he ripped through the Windies with 10 wickets and was also supported by Murray Bennett, that was in 1985 at the SCG and ended the Windies huge long winning streak. I remember the hoo hah when Holland was selected at the ripe old age of 38 but what he did in that test match was folklore.Originally posted by mightyrooster View Post

Peter (WHO ) Taylor came on a few years after that again, his selection was a real shock according to the press at the time, an unknown who had played a few games for NSW.

Green is still being selected on potential.....................how much time does he need?Originally posted by mightyrooster View Post
Oh agree with you on Lyon being left out. A dumb decision as Brisbane is always a great wicket for spinners as they get plenty of bounce there. I like Cameron Green. He’s very talented and will come good.
It used to be that an all-rounder had to be good enough to be selected on one of his skills alone. Green doesn't fit this mold. He wouldn't make the team on his unproductive bowling, and if he is one of the top 6 batsmen in the country we're in big trouble.
I've run out of patience with him.
Compare him to a real all-rounder like Ben Stokes?

I get your frustration Eddie but I’m still hopeful he’ll come good as he’s one of the few talented young players we have coming through. He’s junior and Shield records are outstanding.Originally posted by eddie View Post

I know IPL & Test cricket are different formats but someone rates him & I read that Green could soon become even richer, with Cricket Australia (CA) considering longer-term contracts

It begs the question, why is this team so old?Originally posted by mightyrooster View Post

We've had two debutants this series, and they're both in their 30s.
Where are all the young shield players?
Maybe this BBL nonsense is slowly killing test cricket.

Good luck to Green, but none of this equates to form in test cricket.
