Roosters enforcer puts target on Tamou..

    Ian Mccullough
    April 14, 2012

SYDNEY ROOSTERS prop Jared Waerea-Hargreaves will be out to hit North Queensland front-rower James Tamou hard in Darwin tonight, but denies it is because of his decision to play for Australia and NSW over New Zealand.

Tamou's fine start to the NRL season has him a bolter for a bench spot in the Kangaroos Test squad, which will be named tomorrow, to face the Kiwis in Auckland next Friday.

Waerea-Hargreaves, 23, who's certain to be picked for New Zealand, said he holds nothing against Palmerston North-born Tamou but will be aiming to come out on top when the giants face off in Darwin.

''I respect his decision to play for Australia, it's a personal choice and everyone is entitled to that,'' he said.

''I wish him well, but obviously not during the game as I want to win my battle with him. If that involves hitting him hard, then so be it.''

Tamou, who was raised in Sydney, formally submitted his papers to the ARL Commission on Thursday, pledging his allegiance to the Kangaroos and the Blues. And Waerea-Hargreaves believes the decision will benefit both sides.

''He is a very good player and will be a good addition for Australia, if he gets picked, or NSW,'' he said.

''Obviously I am a proud Kiwi and would have loved to see him play for us, but I have nothing against his decision. I won't say anything to him on the field - the game is hard enough without wasting energy on sledging.''

The fixture at Darwin's TIO Stadium is a Roosters ''home'' game, but the hot and humid conditions will be more familiar to the Townsville-based Cowboys.

And Waerea-Hargreaves acknowledges that the tropical conditions may prove to be a problem, but said coach Brian Smith has prepared his players well.

''It's very warm up here, the sweat has been dripping off me,'' he said.

''But Smithy has been on to us about the importance of taking on fluids regularly. To be fair, this could be a game in Townsville and it wouldn't be that different, so we will just get on with it.

''We are professionals and will still rip in, but it is also a case of playing in a controlled way and trying to ensure we get the two points.''

Elsewhere tonight, star Manly duo Kieran Foran and Brett Stewart remain in serious doubt for the match against the Gold Coast Titans at Brookvale Oval as a result of injuries. The Sea Eagles were not ruling them out officially last night but were readying themselves to be without the pair again.

The Titans scratched centre Beau Champion from their travelling party due to a shoulder injury, and have called in Dominique Peyroux as his replacement.

Gold Coast should, however, be boosted by an earlier than anticipated return of Greg Bird from an ankle problem. The representative lock trained without issue yesterday and travelled to Sydney.

Faark me JWH is a media whore..lol..Lucky he backs it up on the field..

I'll take Jared over Tamou every day of the week..

They're both 23,but Jared seems to be 3 or 4 years more advanced than Tamou..

Plus he has a GF appearance under his belt..

Morphing nicely into the new Mozz..Or a talkative version of him..

The good thing is, that JWH is in the media for all the right reasons.

Add me to the list of those who prefer Rooster players to do their talking ON THE FIELD.

I don't think he'll have much choice for a while, the media love him, maybe Smithy should put a media ban on him like Bennett does or maybe we should just lap it up, especially as how for once it's positive publicity!

i think what needs to be appreciated is that the headlines and writing style is over-hyped to sell papers. i dont know about media whore - the way i see it is considering the year he is having, talent he has and speculation about his contract, the media approach him at every opportunity, he offers them a few brief comments and thats it. next thing you know they dream up an article about him 'smashing' tamou or whatever. not a big deal

Guys, the boys have been doing plenty of publicty up here the past few days to promote the match and the game, which is what this weekend is all about. And they are doing a sterling job of it.

JWH is accessable to everyone - fans and media alike. That's just how the big fella is. And no one should criticise him for it as he's the type of personality that will bring new fans to the game and the club. The guy just loves having a chat!!

Well considering Tamou was playing Toyota Cup for us a few years back, we let him go because we bought Bulldogs in his position and also let Shillington go.
Tamou has cleaned up his stupid penalties like JWH and Shillington has gone through the roof.
Great retention again Roosters, now if SBW is true i guess we will lose the next good bunch because we try and buy the Hype.

Where does whinging come into it???
Im saying thanks to our retention we could of had both and even Shillington, now i know what forward pack id rather have.
Tamou isnt a mug and is equal to JWH IMO, both have different qualities but can both turn it on when needed and both have cleaned up there stupid penalities Tamou more so then JWH.
We will see during tonights game and im guessing both will play well.

People have got to stop crying over spilt milk..The Pillow got offered ridiculous coin that our club would've been insane to try & match..

                      Tamou had off field issues..

You can't keep 'em all & i'm happy with our 3 props..

Some like to look in the rear view mirror..I prefer to look out the windscreen..

Your the one who brung up u'd have JWH over the so called "Pillow" Tamou everyday of the week, I stated we could of had both and YES that does have something to do with our retention.
Give me a break, when does anyone give more COIN then the Roosters, it was because they offered him a shot at First grade.
If we didnt go after Mason we could of offered the same.

                        JWH played 6/Avg Runs 76/Avg Run Mtrs 589/Linebks 1/Hups 76/Offlds 4/Tckls 188/Mssd Tckls 12/ Errors 2

                        Tamou played 6/Avg Runs 91/Avg Run Mtrs 840/Linebks 1/Hups 91/Offlds 3/Tckls 177/Mssd Tckls 14/ Errors 0

                        Shillington played 5/Avg Runs 88/Avg Run Mtrs 737/Linebks 1/Hups 88/Offlds 9/Tckls 97/Mssd Tckls 8/ Errors 2

Mate keep looking in that rear view mirror..

I'll be looking out the windscreen..

Stats can tell you what ever you want them to tell you..Stats don't measure competitiveness & desire, which our 3 boys have got in spades..

There is so much upside to our 3 props that i'd take them over any 3 in the comp..The future is so bright,i gotta wear shades..

And if you'd rather support Tamou & The Pillow over our 3 then that is your right..

I'd prefer to go for Easts..

Ur looking that far ahead im sure ur waiting for 2020 to come around for our next premiership.
Ill always state facts and the fact is we could of had both, especially when we keep mugs like FPN and Symonds.
Ill look Rear view, side view, front view but doesnt shy away that stats do matter and obviously you watch only Roosters games, i guess we will continue this after tonights game see what your thoughts of Tamou are then.
BTW id have Tamou in my starting 13 even if it ment Kennedy to the bench or JWH going to Second Row.

lol@You..Nowhere have i said Tamou is no good, just that i'll take our 3 over him..

If you think we could,or should, fit Tamou,The Pillow,JWH,MK & Tasi under our cap then i don't want you any where near my accounting..

Son you can't keep them all & we have finally chosen well with the 3 we've got ATM,the near future clarify that for you..

Tamou is just the flavour of the month ATM & The Pillow is injury prone nowdays..

I doubt you actually watch much footy Rear View Boy..At least closely..I mean actually observing what is going on..

I reckon you sort of watch it..Then go to the stats for you opinion on the game..

                              Good on you..
