Joseph Suaalii’s future at Roosters in doubt after Joey Manu’s World Cup masterclass

Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson and high-powered chairman Nick Politis will soon sit down to discuss the future of teen sensation Joseph Suaalii.

Joey Manu’s spectacular World Cup performance at fullback for the Kiwis has raised serious question marks around teen sensation Joseph Suaalii’s future at the Sydney Roosters.

Coach Trent Robinson and chairman Nick Politis will soon sit down with Suaalii’s agent Isaac Moses to discuss his long-term future – and no doubt he wants to stay.

However if it is true the 19-year-old wants to play fullback he will have to find a new club.

Tedesco is 29 and Manu is 26 which means Suaalii has a minimum five-year wait to get the No.1 jersey he apparently craves.

Suaalii has had two shots at fullback in recent times.

He played for a badly beaten Samoa against England on Saturday night and for the Roosters against the Rabbitohs in the elimination semi-final last month.

The youngster went okay on both occasions without doing anything that could possibly justify a full-time gig at fullback or an $800,000 NRL contract at the Roosters, certainly not as a winger.

At the same time Manu ran 202 metres and had 12 tackle busts for the Kiwis against Lebanon.

It was like watching Roger Tuivasa-Sheck at his very best in the Kiwi No. 1 jersey.

Last year Suaalii extended for only one season on $700,000 which means he is free to chat and negotiate with rival clubs – and the Australian Rugby Union – in two weeks’ time for the 2024 season.

The recent NRL Rich 100 list showed the highest paid wingers in the game were Dallin Watene-Zelezniak ($800,000) at the Warriors, Nick Cotric ($600,000) at the Raiders, Josh Addo-Carr ($500,000) at the Canterbury Bulldogs, David Nofouluma ($510,000) at the Wests Tigers, Corey Oates ($500,000) at the Broncos and Waqa Blake ($510,000) at the Eels.

Watene-Zelezniak and Cotric were on deals from their previous clubs in different positions.

Politis and Robinson obviously want to keep the youngster at the Roosters.

He’s not just potentially a great player but a likeable, level-headed and humble young man.

The problem is they can’t pay a winger anywhere near what other clubs would be prepared to offer him in his preferred fullback spot.

They also need to upgrade the contract of boom halfback Sam Walker, who they view as the long-term chief playmaker when Luke Keary finishes up at the end of 2024.

Outside of clubs like the Wests Tigers, the Knights or the Dolphins who have cap space, there is also rugby union and the fact the Wallabies would be prepared to pay him $1 million a year as they plan for the 2027 World Cup in Australia.

Steve Nasteski, an art dealer who sponsored Suaalii in South Sydney’s junior ranks, recently spoke of the teenager’s ambitions to play fullback.

“Tedesco is a once-in-a-generation player, but Joseph is once in a lifetime,” he told Nine newspapers.

It is well known in rugby league that Politis and the Roosters rarely, if ever, lose a player they want to keep.

However if Suaalii wants to play fullback and earn $1 million, even the Roosters can’t accommodate that.

I have no doubt he will leave for union.
He will go play in the World Cup and then return to the roosters as fullback, by then Teddy will be retired and Manu will be a little older and slower moving somewhere else in the team.

Can't argue with Buzz he is spot on. Its joseph's call i reckon he wants to win a premiership at the roosters and genuinely likes the club, Manu is a plus not a negative he is close with joey and teddy see what happens but i think he has played his last game on the wing for us he will play center next year maybe even a couple of games at fullback be interesting to see what happens

Suaalii should take note of a Rolling Stones song title " Time is on My Side "

Dallin Watene-Zelezniak ($800,000) at the Warriors??? Can't catch and is infamous for his misreads in defence. Can't be right

In fact all the wingers listed besides Addo-Carr are lucky to be on 300k let alone the figures showing. Surely Parra aren't paying Waqa Blake 510k

Suaalii is going to be phenomenal-no doubt. Im sure Teddy will play 5/8 once Keary is gone....and have no doubts that Manu will be fullback. Its hard to see where Suaalii fits in-but i hope he does somewhere

            Right so...

            - NZ beats Lebanon (only just TBH, woulda expected it to be by more!!!)

            - Samoa gets smashed by England (didn't watch but something's clearly gone wrong from a coaching/tactical/prep perspective there given all the NRL talent Samoa had on paper)

            - Buzz says this means Sua'ali'i is toast because Manu won a game of footy and Sua'ali'i didn't. This all presumes it's one or the other, fighting for a position where we already have an incumbent player who's the beat in the trade!

C'aaaaarn Buzz, you can do better son!

I love the kid but right now and probably for a while yet, he’s not a fullbacks arsehole.

Buzz is an idiot. Robbo and Nick knew they had this issue well before this “World Cup” begun.

                  Buzz is playing with himself
Manu played strong against a NSW Cup standard side & because of that game Suaalii has to leave.

Good luck to suaalii, for us it’s a curse of having two great players ahead of him, and he needs 3-4 years to get the spot he must want, I wish players these days had an ambition to be the best Center in the game, instead of using it as a stepping stone.

Thought he was very poor on the weekend at FB. His only moment of brilliance was a strong direct run one off the ruck which he can do at wing when he comes in otherwise his positioning was shocking and he is quite clearly a ball hog.. doesn’t like to pass

He hasn't developed a passing game...yet....of which he is aware ...but teddy didn't have a passing game either in his early years...it's only a feature in the last 3 or 4 years...

To be fair... it's sorta hard to look good when your team's down 60-6?

If they can comfortably beat Greece + France then I reckon Samoa's got a lot more potential than what they showed against England!

To me the only real risk is leaving for Rah rah given all the top contenders in the NRL have a marquee fullback. If he wanted to chase money he could go to a Tigs or a Dolphins but where else could he legitimately go.

I think he'll stick around for 2023 and potentially 2024 signing an extension, play on the wing and in the centres for two years then leave for the RWC cycle in 2025-2027. By that time he'll still only be in his early to mid 20s. Can return ala Sonny Bill.

Why wouldn’t Nick and Robbo be looking at running him a run at left centre? (probably show Momo the door, and use his wage to upgrade JS)
