  • A conundrum - Teddy, Manu or Suallii?

The elephant in the room is we will be unable to keep all three beyond next year. The competition will be too fierce - these guys are all worth considerable money and all are top fullbacks. We will certainly lose one of them, that is beyond doubt.

If someone put a gun to your head, who would you cut loose?

For me it is Suallii. This is not a knock on him, more a punt on the fact his ceiling is unknown. We've seen with generational talents like RTS and Ponga that despite their greatness and ability, there can be constraints. In RTS case in particular, it underscores the importance of culture and a well balanced squad in order to achieve maximum potential.

Teddy and Manu are proven premiership winners. Teddy is the best fullback in the game with no sign of slowing down, and Manu is arguable the best second phase player/ball runner in the game, who can play almost anywhere except prop.

I would be confident in the decision to keep Teddy and Manu when push comes to shove

WHats your choice? And please dont answer 'Uncle Nick always gets his man and we'll keep all three' . Because that is not true and is not how it will go down over the next year or two.

Didn’t Tedesco literally say that he’s happy for a position swap to keep both Joseph’s here?

Yeah IMO that's our trump card. Teddy's willing to play the long game in order to keep both of them in his team.

Politis said it on Roosters Radio... people stay because we set them up with careers post-footy. There's a salary cap now, but Nick will set you up if (like Friendie and Cords) you take unders to stay around, while also taking on leadership duties.

Teddy's earned $1m+ per year for a while now and has also done a heap of 3rd party endorsements because he's the face of the game right now. He won't go poor if he takes a $600k cut to give Manu and Sua'ali'i an extra $300k each.

Manu and Teddy are contracted to 2024 so no we don’t have to cut one loose. Sua'ali'i has a player option for 2024. Manu would have had a lot of options and more money offered when his last contract expired and yet he chose to stay at the Roosters. I think the media is obsessed with everyone wanting to play fullback, maybe the players think differently and just want to play at a great club

I'll worry about it after we have finished our season....still trying to win a comp for the moment.

How good is it to have 3 players in our team that are / or could be possibly be the best 3 fullbacks in the NRL . Crazy

I would let Keary go. Move Manu into 5/8 as a running 5/8. I think in 12 months time Walker will have enough experience to run and direct the team himself. I think in today's market 5/8 and fullbacks are on similar money so that would appease Manu. Move Sualli into centre with the long term goal being fullback. During this period it will allow him to develop further an understanding of our great game. Sualli will be on good money at centre with the intention to play the same type of game Manu plays now, the end result being given the fullback role in 3 to 4 seasons when Teddy retires.

I doubt Uncle Nick and Robbo are thinking conundrums.
Have you seen the teams we have had since 2013 and winning three premierships? As if 2024/2025 brings us any more conundrums. We will keep them all unless Suaalii really wants to leave for union.

Keary retires with concussion after next year. Manu to 6, Suaalii to 1 & Teddy to centre. There’ll be a way to keep all 3, as long as we can keep the egos in check.

What's with everyone wanting to be fullback.
Teddy stays fullback, Manu stays right centre, and Suaalii plays left centre.
                            Keary plays 5/8.
                            Walker plays half back.
                            Just like now.

Reading rumours that Suaalii's management is saying the club needs to pick Tedesco or Suaalii long term, you'd think Tedesco has 3 years ahead of him as an elite fullback and probably could still be a strong fullback afterwards, maybe at 32-33 Tedesco could make the move to 6 and one of Manu/Suaalii could play fullback?

Not sure if that's what Suaalii is looking for...Manu seems fine with waiting though.

It's a money thing isn't it? A world class spine player will typically get 900k+ a year, quick Google search has told me that the highest paid centre is on 700,000 a year. If Suaalii does indeed become a world class fullback (Which I think he will) he could probably command 1.1 - 1.2 million a year.
