This is the best game of the season bar none. No matter who you support there is no other regular season game that can match it for "event" status - it's a ripper and so well done and so respectfully done.Originally posted by mattyh View Postif this is not the best day of the roosters regular season , im not here , the stories especially rw & b , yea there was no counselling whem you got back . just back to work , thanks .

I don't have a war connection - just that lucky time of life for all my recent( last 100 years) family of never being in that age group where service was possible. However when you are at this game every year and the last post plays I tear up everytime.

Both my Grandfathers and 8 Great Uncles fought in WW1.Originally posted by Johnny Brass View Post
My grandfather fought over in France during the 1st world war and never spoke about it much though I remember dad telling me that we were lucky to be here because he had got shot, gassed at another time and buried under dirt when a shell exploded near the trenches and a mate had pulled him out. I turned to my old pa and asked him if he died which made him crack up laughing.
The other thing i remember was an old digger mate called in and they were saying that a shovel was better than the rifle and bayonet in close quarters in the trenches.
Always grateful for the sacrifices of our armed services.
My Fathers Father was gassed / wounded plus had trench feet. - He passed away before I was born the same as my Mothers Father
Anyway I heard he used to wear 3 or 4 pairs of socks and had a wood fire going at nigh/during the day as he could never keep his feet warn.
This would have contributed to his early passing at 52
WW2- My Father fought in North Africa/Syria against the Germans/Italians and Vichy French /PNG against the Japanese - 3 Uncles were RAF bomber crew and another one flew Spitfires and Hurricanes / My Mother was WRAF.
My Father would never eat Lamb or Beef only Pork and Chicken/Turkey - later found out the reason why - the tinned Bully Beef and Mutton they were provided with along with a hard tack biscuit - not sure how old it was as it was mentioned it could have been leftovers from WW1 and of course the plague of flies which would land in the food would make the troops quite ill at times.
Only one of the Uncles who was RAF Bomber Crew spoke about it - hardest thing being the next morning at Breakfast after the night time missions over Germany - the empty tables where bomber crews once sat at - some bailed out and become POW's but some didn't make it.
Very superstitious bomber crews though - you never changed bomber crews and you never dwelled on missing crews as he said you just got on with it.

Imagine if the millenniums went to war old school style like the soldiers in the past did. They would all seek the limelight & have to tell everyone how bad & hard it was yet them mainly young men & some women who did go off to fight in WW1 WW2 & Vietnam which was hell on Earth hardly mentioned it when they came back. Its bit like when you see Don Bradman lift his bat gracefully when he scored a century compared to Dave Warner who carries on like he's the only person to have scored a century running down the pitch fist pumping.Originally posted by mattyh View Postif this is not the best day of the roosters regular season , im not here , the stories especially rw & b , yea there was no counselling whem you got back . just back to work , thanks .

Absolutely. Even non Roosters/Dragons fans agree that this is the biggest regular season game of the year. Both clubs and the NRL pull it off nicely. Personally I look forward to this clash as much as I do the Easts vs Vermin match upsOriginally posted by The Lip View Post

I recognise a lot of what you've just said Salvo. That's the condition that Dad had and did contribute to his passing also, hence Mum being able to be classified as a War Widow. We had a fuel stove too growing up in the bush and Mum used to chop the wood when Dad could no longer. Your family has a very long and proud history of service.Originally posted by King Salvo View Post

Thanks Matty but my posts are no more important than anyone else's on here. I was just thinking how lucky we are to have these stories we share on here every year. There is always something new to learn about our fellow Roosters fans and their families too.Originally posted by mattyh View Postif this is not the best day of the roosters regular season , im not here , the stories especially rw & b , yea there was no counselling whem you got back . just back to work , thanks .
