Not a huge fan of the fine system.
A lot of money to pay for an unavoidable accident, doesn't seem very ethical from the NRL.
I'm sure SST earns enough to not feel it too badly but I felt for the kid Hethrington last week.
Players are quite literally paying for the fallout of policy on the run.

Serious question: What I don't understand is why SST has only copped a fine? If his crime was so bad that he was sent to the bin, then surely he should be suspended right? Or are the NRL now saying that the original call of sending SST to the bin was too harsh? In which case an on-field call of a pentaly would had suffice?

SST's one of the softest/gentlest blokes out there when it comes to anything other than a legit tackle. Even Cleary's dad said it was BS during his conference (which IMO has a lot of weight because he's literally talking about his son's welfare & saying they had no concerns about it).
I'd argue that if anything, SST's big meaty arm and his gentle holding of Cleary (rather than dropping him on the ground hard he placed him down gentle) acted as a protective cradle that softened the impact (if anything).
IMO this is a broader another issue. Big islanders like SST are usually extremely aware/respectful of other people's welfare to the point where their instinct is to protect an opposition player who is slipping into a bad position. Do we want a game where such people start stepping outta the way of falling players (including situations where their head/back is about to go crunch) rather than reaching out to protect them coz even a protective cradle for their head is gonna result in a send-off? (Sorry 'sin-bin' in Vland-arse's new world... not that an 80-minute 'send-off' is really a thing, unless you do something that's gonna land you in a prison cell for the night [e.g. bash up the ref or the fans... never happened to my knowledge, and IMO it's not an option for any sort of high tackle... maybe for farking Munster losing it and kicking a guy, followed by an 8 week suspension as he has done it before? Oh sorry... the Melbourne Project must succeed, sorry... can't say that]).Last edited by ism22; 06-19-2021, 12:03 PM.

I am not sure about that - it is a grey area in such incidents which was a similar to the Bronco's players one although that player was sent off and later fined only too - They seem to have a blanket rule on any contact to the head whether reckless, incidental or accidental.
Years ago players would be exhonerated at the judiciary if say the arm hit the ball or shoulder and then hit the ball carriers head - mitigating circumstances.
No such defence nowadays - mitigating circumstances
I liken it to the 7 tackle rule which was brought in to stop teams deliberatley kicking the ball dead in goal to set their defence - now it is also for if a ball carrier looses the ball in the in goal area / the attacking grubber or other kick that goes touch in goal and the defending player catching the ball on the full in the in goal area- none of those would be deliberate acts by the attacking team i.e it's a blanket rule
The arm hitting the ball or shoulder and then hitting the head is an interesting one in terms of mitigating circumstances - if a player did this on a regular basis would this still be accidental and mitigating circumstances would still prevail though or is there an issue with the players tackling technique or have they been trained to tackle that way?

It's not the fine it's a principle. Just because Cleary is falling SST can bloody magically vanish, change direction of even lower his arm.....there was nothing SST could've done I reckon. So basically they binned him and fined him for a Cleary slip of fall......yeah makes sense.

How is a player fined after already paying the price of being sent to the bin? That sin bin was costly enough to player, club and… fans. Either put them on report and either fine them or suspend them the next day but this sin bin and fine is a double penalty for a foul eventually not deemed to be that serious. That’s double dipping IMO! If the govt was doing that, it would be a scandal and all over the news.

That incident as well as the one that got the Bronco Hetherington sent off should not even be penalties. I know by the current "standards" it is, but really how can someone be penalised when they don't do anything wrong. Except in an inept and contemptuous environment.
The issue here is not the "high shots" its the inept and unprofessional way the games are officiated
The Internet is a place for posting silly things
Try and be serious and you will look stupid
