Don’t worry about the “official announcement”. He’s coming for sure. As soon as Robbo confirmed we were interested he was as good as here.

                • his comments suggest that he'll come to play as back up hooker, not 6. still, things can change when he gets here ...

Agreed - it'll take a pretty big backflip from here. I'd say they're just finalising the details.

Sounds like that's the plan. However, if he plays #14 then who knows what will happen. IMO it isn't uncommon for a dude to be expected to go on in a general playmaking role to make runs/passes/kicks/intercepts/tackles...etc wherever they see fit. To me that's why he'd play hooker (so that he isn't artificially expected to play on one side of the field).

This is why I'm confused what the difference is between the two halves and the hooker really. Like I'm sure I'd know if I played in those positions (at a decent level) but IMO it's all pretty fluid and depends which team you're playing for.

Generally speaking what... #7 is on the right, #6 is on the left and #9 is a 'first receiver' who does more tackling and decides whether it's going left/right? m

                    In practice though...
                    - The best players generally play on both sides of the field, where needed, so #6 and #7 are just jersey numbers.
                    - Hookers can choose to run the ball rather than passing it. Also, if somebody else is first receiver (i.e. regularly), nothing's stopping them from calling for the ball on the left/right side of the field.
                    - The Drizz does something like this when Grant and Smith are on the field concurrently. They have Munster, Grant and Smith [while Hughes is having a snooze because their 5/8 is their dominant half who 'owns the result'].
                    - Overall I don't think it matters whether his jersey has a 6, 7, 9 or 14. The question is whether he can play footy. If he can... I'm sure we'll see him doing good stuff on all sides of the field.

                    • Pretty impressive that he can kick a ball that far. Will possibly help for drop-outs...

The one thing I miss about Latrell is the length he got on his drop-outs when we were under the pump.

That's at altitude though - ball travels quicker and further/farther in such conditions - not uncommon in South Africa for kickers to kick goals/field goals from 60 to 70 metres out with ease.

At altitude, the air pressure is lower, and so are aerodynamic effects such as drag and lift, ultimately causing balls to travel faster , straighter and further than they would at lower altitude.

                          • If Sam Verrills stays fit I believe he can be the equal to Harry Grant so I cant see Perenera playing hooker. If the teams winning with Walker & Hutch I wouldnt change things if 1 of them gets injured or the team lose then Lam & then if the Roosters buy him Perenera would come into contention.

Hold onto to your toupee Mickie but when TJ is fit to play, he will play at 14 or to cover a half or hooker. He's an elite player in rugby and wont be brought to the club to play at Norths. He may even replace Walker in a few games because he is carrying a shoulder injury since his first game and Robbo may give him a rest or may succumb to it, who knows but TJ is not here to play as a reserve. I can even see TJ do a box kick from as dummy half which eventually leads to a try .

                              • Sport Confidential: Roosters’ final hurdle to snare All Blacks star TJ Perenara
The Roosters are closing in on signing All Blacks star TJ Perenara but there is one final hitch that needs to be resolved.

Only one thing stands between TJ Perenara and a code switch to NRL club Sydney Roosters – income protection insurance.
Perenara is determined to play in the NRL, and is trying to clear the final hurdle in order to join the likes of John Schuster and Craig Innes as
All Blacks who have switched to the NRL without professional league experience.

The Roosters will pay Perenara about $150,000 to join them for the rest of the season to play hooker, covering a raft of injuries including the concussion-enforced retirement of Jake Friend.

Perenara earns about $600,000 a year in New Zealand and Japanese rugby, however, under the standard NRL contract Perenara will only be covered for a career-ending injury on the value of his Roosters contract.

The 69-Test All Black and his management are trying to find an insurance policy to cover his worth as a rugby international, instead of his lesser value as a mid-season league recruit. The insurance cover over a maximum two years for career-ending injuries guarantees 80 per cent of a player’s salary in the first year, and 60 per cent in the second year.

If Perenara, 29, were to suffer a career-ending injury in the NRL, the difference in insurance payout between his league and rugby policies could be up to $630,000.

Meanwhile, the Roosters have re-signed 21-year-old centre Billy Smith for two more years.
