    Mortimer is an intriguing one..

He looked like a potential star when he helped Hayne get Parra to the GF..

Then he got the worst case of 2nd year syndrome since Tim Smith..

I hope he finds that '09 form again..I agree he could carve it up..

Needs to work on his passing & kicking IMO..

      Dumbrell is the best option.

Great defender and great running game, perfect impact player.

        I agree with you 100%.

I can't wait for Morts to make the Wit brothers, Half, Faaark and nit eat humble pie.

What makes you so confident that our young players are ready to step up to first grade this year?

I think we need to be patient, and not to underestimate the different game being played in the NYC and the NRL.

In other words, I don't think Dumbrell is ready.

Put Mitchell in the halfback spot, Morts in at 5/8th.

            I'm only half joking.

Defensively his technique is excellent, he's shown the ability to deal with a high workrate and was a leader for our team all year. For me these are the traits I look for in forwards when judging whether they can make the step up. A good workrate and a good defensive technique, their attack will fall into place on the back of that.

If we had a decent standard reserve competition then ideally we'd be promoting our youngsters from the 20's to there and then picking them based on their merits. Unfortunately though we don't so picking them based on their performances in the 20's really isn't as outlandish as you make it seem.

You've obviously backed us to collect the cutlery this year!

I've thrown a 20 down on the Roosters for the spoon every year that Anasta has been in the 5/8th spot.

I'd like to see Dumbrell play for Newtown for at least 10 games and see how he goes. He's certainly a brilliant attacking player, possibly the best attacking hooker at the club. But I felt he dropped off a bit at the end of the season. A lot of that may have had to do with the minutes he was getting. The coaching staff seem to like young Clarrie Moore and he was getting 45-50 mins with Dumbrell starting and finishing games. I'd like to see how he handles the size and physicality of State Cup opposition because in NYC when he'd come up against a really big guy he'd make the tackle but would often be dominated by the attacker. This may have been a result of his good enthusiasm getting out of the line and more often than not being the first impact in tackles. He needs to learn to work with the line a bit more in my opinion. Other than that he would be a very good addition to the first grade side this year. Over 30 metres he appears quicker than just about every player at the club so his dummy half running creates a great number of opportunities. Also a good sign to suggest he could transfer these dh line breaks into first grade is that he made most of these breaks in the first 30 mins of games when opposition ruck forwards should not have been that tired and lazy. Give him half a season playing with the big boys pushing himself to 65 minutes game time while working on his Cohesion with the defensive line and then he'll be ready for the top grade. Until then Ant Mitchell is a solid option.
