  • Sideways

I have one word for our attack tonight and it’s the heading for this thread. No one wanted to do the hard yards tonight aside from Lindsay.. too lateral too much block plays too easy to read tonight so frustrating to watch

Sideways footy worked in the opening 2 rounds.

There’s nothing wrong with sideways footy, you just need to earn the right to do it against the better sides first and we didn’t. We skipped the hard work through the middle and went straight to spreading the ball out to our three-quarters.

Yes that’s what I meant you just worded it better! We didn’t want to establish the hard yards first and always looked to spread it even in our own 20 very frustrating to watch

Worked against 2 of the bottom teams. Nothing wrong with sideways footy? Everything is wrong with sideways footy.

Was it the plan to go sideways though from the get go - Didn't seem to be a plan B when this wasn't working- Players are experienced enough or should be to work this out though - it's not working so lets go through the middle and finish sets with a good kick etc etc- Eventually one assumes through tiredness or momentum you can then go sideways and find the gaps and tired defenders to exploit for point scoring opportunities.

We haven’t done a good job of establishing the hard yards for a while now, there were some really bad signs in the Raiders trial given the way they dominated the opening 20minutes until they took their starting pack off the field. I don’t even think the Souths pack is that good but it was like our forwards were playing up an age group they got bent back in nearly every tackle and these were very similar signs coming out of our performances against Penrith and Canberra as we bowed out in straight sets from last years finals series.

They don’t hunt like a pack anymore, we don’t force the good sides to kick from inside their own 30m anymore, we don’t make sides feel any pressure any more. The Bondi wall was more than just defending a goal line, it was a way of beating teams into submission and then using that pressure and ascendency to run over the top of them but you had to be in the grind first before you got there and we’re not even getting into the grind. Our pack is a group of talented individuals, all seemingly playing to a different plan at the moment. It’s hard to criticise any one individual but as a collective they’ve been very poor for a while now and they seem to escaping a lot of criticism for it.

I’m tired of seeing SST putting in workman like performances, sure individually the stats are great and he’s doing a great job. You can’t knock 52 tackles and 130m. But I want to see the old SST, the bloke who was near impossible to tackle, busting the line, leaving defenders on the floor. Not the bloke that’s so tired by the time it’s his turn to take a carry that he only sometimes bends the line and even then it may only be for a few more yards.

We miss a Sam Moa, someone who will just run up and down the field all day at 100kms/ph without a fear in the world for personal preservation.

We miss Victor Radley, a bloke who leads the line speed in defence and will snap someone in half completely changing the momentum of a set.

We miss Boyd Cordner, a bloke who can come in at any point of any game at any time and just charge onto a ball break through the other side, find his front and play the ball before the defensive line has even started retreating to their 10m mark.

The forward pack is still living on past achievements, time to create their own legacy.

The football has to go sideways to take advantage of your outside backs, there are just as many sides guilty of not playing enough sideways footy and getting trapped playing down the middle corridor for the whole game.

There is nothing wrong with sideways footy, as I said you just have to earn the right to play it first by tiring out the middles and getting the opposition to condense their line as a result and we have struggled with that of late.

Whether you like sideways footy or not, our main issue was that we couldn't go forward and up the middle against Souffs. We had no punch with our attack and we did not want to bite down on the mouth guard and run hard. Too many of our forwards are passing the ball and playing the ball like their halves and NOT running with it.

Our pack looked weak, old, slow and we got dominated.

Melbourne had the blueprint in round 1. Forwards up the middle and short passes to get our players through holes. We just went sideways from the get go and didn’t straighten our attack at all

I agree, some of our best footy is played sideways. You just have to work for it and we didn’t do that

I still don’t know why they were making 70m a set and us 30m. Was our defence waiting for them to run 10m before meeting them? Were they running up to meet us. Can someone please explain this or is it simply we didn’t bend the line back because we couldn’t.?

Yeah exactly right mate, we never earned the right to play attacking footy, like 6 has mentioned - you need to bash teams up the guts, defend well and pressure well then you can spread it and play block play after block play when the opposition is starting to fatigue and then we can make inroads. Last night at the game we tried to do it from the get go and never changed to plan B.

Agree but i like the sideway style when a Radleys on full tilt hitting the gaps straightening up the attack! Last year it was Radley 5/8 /lock ! We ganna win this year and Radley Teddy and Walker combo
