The ref's are at fault with some of these third man in as they sometimes allow an attacking play more time than warranted to stand in a tackle and get off loads away when they have been stopped in the tackle - that rubbish of surrender and dominant tackle too - if a player tackles someone around the legs and they try to get up but are still being held by the defender they get a penalty or 6 again - isn't a tackle around the legs a dominant one as well? able to lay all over an attacking player for way too long in dominant tackles the same with the surrender tackle - get rid of them both.
mmm always makes me laugh the terminology they use - dominant / surrender /escorts/prowler etc -someone hearing these terms would think they are talking about B & D / S & M or red light establishments not a sporting code
The rule for third man in is below -
Third Man In
When a player in possession is held in an upright position by two defenders, any other defender[s] must make initial contact to the player in possession above the knees/knee joint. Regardless of the point of impact, a player can still be penalised for any ‘forceful, dangerous or unnecessary contact’ at the legs that involves an unacceptable risk of injury to the player in possession. In relation to this type of tackle, the Referees will call ‘held’ and then ‘release’.
Surrender Tackle
Occurs when the player in possession surrenders his run in or at the line. Defender[s] are permitted to work the player on the ground, move to a bear hug position, lay on the player in possession or spin to the front of the tackle. It is the sole responsibility of the Referee to identify this tackle. If a player surrenders, he cannot be lifted or dragged into touch or in-goal.
A dominant tackle is judged to be when the defender makes contact and drives the attacker back in one movement. The dominant tackle call rewards good technique and allows the defender extra time before the attacker must be released to be allowed to play-the-ball.

Any other team does it:
- 'Dangerous contact... penalty' [we never see it again]
Storm do it:
- 'ooooh... aaaaah... so intelligent... have we expressly named that manoeuvre in our rules? Nope... it's 100% legit then... keep doing it even though it's clearly a dog act!!!'

Well you see oddly enough... the refs generally blow their whistle and call a penalty as soon as you delay people (i.e. no warning at all) rather than yelling out '... TACKLED... ... ... RELEASE... ... ... GET OFF NOW [STORM PLAYER]'Last edited by ism22; 03-26-2021, 05:17 PM.
