  • Boyd Cordner's replacement?

Still no hints about who the Roosters will sign as a temporary replacement for Boyd? I think the rule is that the $350,000 cap concession needs to be spent on an extra player of comparable experience. It can't just go into the coffers and be used to re-sign an existing player.

Clearly, the Roosters have someone in mind or they wouldn't have applied to the NRL. This was in today's paper, but I'm not sure this guy fits the profile:

COWBOYS FACE BATTLE TO KEEP 124KG BEAST

The North Queensland Cowboys are facing a fight to retain the latest rookie forward set to make a name for himself from the North Island of New Zealand.

Wiremu Greig, 21, made his debut for the Maori All Stars last weekend and has caught the eye of talent scouts from rival clubs Melbourne Storm, Sydney Roosters, Parramatta and St George Illawarra.

A 124kg front-rower, Greig has quickly established a reputation as an emerging hard nut among some of the Cowboys most senior NRL forwards.

A 21 YO 124 kg front rower doesn’t sound like a player that has comparable experience to Cords.

I believe it can be used for an existing player, only if they play in the same position. Use it to upgrade Angus

I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't sign anyone. He's our only long term injury at the moment and we have 2 good starting options with some good youth to back it up should there be another injury.

Its smart business to get the exemption just in case there's another injury and the need to bring in more depth or in case a Luke O'Donnell / SBW scenario pops up otherwise I don't think we will use it just for the sake of using it.

Experience has nothing to do with it. The rules state the Cap dispensation can only be used on a “like-for-like" player, i.e. another backrower.

Correct a like for like player upto 350k so a backrower - doesn't mean they have to spend all of it on this one player but they can't use any left over money for someone else either - be either external signing or internal promotion from development players as someone already in the NRL squad cannot be topped up in salary under the cap relief rules- that player will become player 29 as well so if they sign or promote internally they will have only 1 NRL spot left.

Heard that Brad Abbey will be an NRL squad signing as cover for Tedesco - with Smith out for 1/2 the season they would be reluctant to move Manu to FB for a long period and weaken the centre position.

              Who told you that?

Bmoz awaits to cover 1 as well. Young Joe will come in via the flank if/when approval is granted.

Abbey played in that trial against the WT and is still training with the NRL squad/ Clubs have to name a 29th player by March 1 if roster of 30 not already filled and have till June 30 to fill all 30 spots. Abby may be signed to a Part time contract with Norths too?. Abbey had a train and trial deal with WT in 2020

But the only thing that makes you a backrower is your experience as a backrower, no? So we couldn't sign a utility (a Mitch Aubusson type) who had played backrow and most other positions on the field?

Like for like is the rules so will have to be backrower either external signing or internal promotion from development players or those not signed for top 30 or development contracts. Can't be used to top up existing contracts either or used to sign more than one player. Don't have to spend all 350k but any money left over is then forfeited/not carried over for use later on when the salary cap relief player is signed.

That player will also become player 29 for the Chooks(currently 28 signed) and will have to be available for selection if not injured of course for the whole season not just the period of time the player they are replacing under this cap relief is out for.

If say the Chooks already had signed 30 players and applied for cap relief and signed a player that player would then be technically player 31. Meaning the player they were replacing(Cords) could not play again that season when available to play again as the NRL squad would then be 31 players - only can have 30 .

Of course if there was a high injury toll teams could apply to add players to the 30 under dispensation rules- i.e Lussick last season -wasn't part of the 30 but due to season ending injuries to Verrills and Radley ( a hooker option as well) the Chooks were down to one hooker although Lam played there he would be deemed a half/5/8.
