SM, we are 16 rounds into the comp. Wouldn't you have thought our defensive problems should have been sorted out a little sooner?

Our goaline defence is deplorable. Under 10s would do a better job.

Sydney Heads opens up on our goal line week after week. The attitude to that has not improved, as it has in other facets of their game.

And they don't need to talk, they just need to bleeding tackle. Actions speak louder than words. Surely they should all know their position in the defensive structure and it's just a matter of defending your bit of territory. Or is that being too simplistic???

NC, melon is correct there has been a bad attitude in the club since the start of the season.

we have improved the attitude within the team over the past 3 weeks, for what ever reason, it started V Manly.

As i said it is getting there and the defence is the last part that needs to be fixed.

and yes it is being too simplistic, it is not just a matter of tackling a player, it is all about tackling the right player, knowing where you are in the defensive line, knowing who you player to mark is, knowing which player is next to you, knowing how close you are to the line, knowing that you have a player next to you that has urgency to defend the goal line.

This is where communication comes into it. a team can tackle, yeah thats all good and well, but you also need to make sure your team mates know who you are tackling or know who they are tackling.

They increase the talk on the defensive line, increase the communication, you will see a defensive attitude that will be alot stronger and formidible, especially on the goal line !

        SM,

Perhaps you're right but right now on the goal line they're not talking, tackling, or doing anything else of note.

And the opposition know it. They know if they charge at us up the middle there's a try underneath the post, no risk.

You'd think our team would have a little more pride in their own performances than having that occur week after week, but it appears not to be the case.

They've had more than 1/2 a season to get their act together - the time for any excuses is long gone. Time to take responsibility and act.

          NC,

Like i said, for what ever reason, the attitude adjustment kicked in against manly, for what ever reason thats where it began, cannot explain why but it did, no point in harping on why it did not happen earlier because that will not change what happened.

They are now starting to get their acts together, they are now starting to play as a team.

They are playing with pride, their attack has improved, they are now playing for at least 70 minutes. the last 10 % comes down to talking and communicating in defence.

i tell you, the pride from the players is there, they know whats happened this season, they know that they will miss on the finals and they are now confrunted with the clubs first wooden spoon in a LONG time.

They do not want to be in this position, i know this for a fact.

the last 10 %, the talking in defence, this is the key to a roosters win.

I don't even think it is a matter of rushing up, i think it is players being slack and hanging back. When you're defending the goal line your only option is to move up quickly in a line and cut the opposition playmakers of valuable time. If you sit on the line you will have straight running second rowers crashing over with ease.

We are very lucky O'donnel wasn't playing, he would of had a field day.

While we are on the subject, Roosters are the only team that doesn't exert pressure on the opposition on last tackle. They sit back and give the bloke hours to position his kick.

Whether it is laziness or poor communication, we have a couple of players doing the right thing, and others hanging back causing big gaps in defence.

I kept an eye on our goal line defence and came up with this.

The first cowboys try, friend rushed out too fast causing the hole in defence to allow webb to score.

second try shack was standing flat footed rather than follow burnes, cherro marked his man but was too late in reacting to cover (outside in) for shack.

3rd try, this was the Payne try from Dummy half, firstly, the defensive line was WAY TOO SPREAD out around the ruck, Payne took the ball from dummy half, threw the dummy, cherro fell for it, lopini from marker was the only person who could tackle him, but could not stop him.

4th try, BAD defensive positioning and communication, both friend and pearce were defending next to each other, friend raced to take the ball player, pearce followed the outside man, tried to change direction to take southern, but he had too much momentum for pearce to stop him.

these 4 tries show the problems in the roosters goal line defence.

they need to be aware of where they are and who is around them, if they are near the ruck, they need to be close and tight.

Communication and urgency is also Key, the 2nd try is a perfect example of this, urgency was needed by shack and communication or talk was needed by cherro to maintain the integrity of the defensive line.

so the 3 key points are:

              *Awareness of surroundings
              *Communication
              *URGENCY !!!!!
              Gee thanks scoop.

We dont have The Tude. Hence we are lost in defence.
The Roosters have got "The Turd".
