I think it would be advantageous to finish 4th and drive to Penrith in Week 1 of the semis rather than have a 1 day return trip to Brisbane to play Melbourne in week 1.

That's the way I see it too.
If we have top 4 wrapped up when we play the Vermin in the final round, we should rest half the team as the game will be inconsequential.
And if we lose that game by a couple of points, because we are giving game time to the youngsters, the Vermin supporters will be celebrating like they have won the GF, and the media (and the haters like Ikin & Tallis) will go nuts and say we are no longer a finals threat.
Then , when the real games begin, we will blast our opponents off the park.
