Norths have been trying to get back in for ever and say they have the finical backing, they probably did have but that would of dried up now so can't see them taking over any club that goes broke.
- The players will get $160m all up as promised. A lot of that will fall outside the stand down period (think how just a few months ago we were whinging about having to pay 'trell ~$200k while he kicked stones).
- Operational costs will go down coz we won't be paying for any travel, stadium hire, support staff...etc. This will offset the drop in revenue.
- Fox (and Kayo) + Channel 9 will wear their own risk of enterprise. They have made a significant investment in their sports coverage and won't want it to all just flop. There's big corporate backing!
- The season will probably be run in winter once COVID-19's blown over. There will be lotsa time to work this out.
- Nobody's suggested that the NRL or clubs will be insolvent.
Long story short a percentage of our revenue will be lost and there will be offsets from resulting saves. Outta $1 billion worth of commitments the NRL needs to find less than $160 million to keep the players happy (in reality probably ~30%).
Worst come to worst, the clubs and NRL simply wouldn't pay their staff until the competition resumed. Those not on $$$ contracts could all go on Cenno until operations startup again.
It s*x but like I said... force majeure... the clubs and NRL may not have to pay a cent during this period. However, like Fox, it may be in their best interests to pay up regardless coz they wanna secure their investment in the comp! If nothing else, Rupert's not gonna bail on the NRL because somebody else (shock - FTA TV) would come in with a bail-out package, stack the NRL's board [plus every other sport's board] and be like 'NEVER EVER... EVER... let Murdoch exercise so much power over us again!!!' Bye bye Fox Sports. Bye bye Kayo. Bye bye political influence...etc. He's simply not gonna do that coz he NEEDS exclusive content. He's only gonna have exclusive content if he looks after the players and clubs.
