I was sort of watching Belinda a bit closer than other refs last night to see how she went.

What I did notice was the role of that "pocket" referee. They're more a bloody coach! Calling players by name to do this, don't do that in every ruck.

That shouldn't be the job of the referees. When/how did this all change?

I think thats been going on for quite a while now. I dont agree with it but its just what they do.

I remember watching the Australian Open a number of years ago and John Alexander was commentating with Navratilova when he referred to the Girls when describing the Woman’s comp. He wasn’t being a dick or anything - just speaking like an Aussie and Martina fully took exception. Said they’re not girls, they’re women which got me thinking at the time.

Having been a professional linesman and before that a ball boy, I can tell you that there were other players I preferred to be in the presence of. I enjoyed Anna Kornikova’s matches. Didn’t mind her bending over in front of me. Gabriella Sabatini also was one of my faves.

Yes...my last line should have said "Why did this happen", not when.

Just wanted to rant about it after paying closer attention to what the referees actually do. They really should be called Coaches not Referees. It must drive the players crazy to have an official barking orders at them every single ruck. They have a whistle to draw attention if required.

I certainly am all for minimal penalties, don't get me wrong. But there must be a happier medium there whereby the refs talk less AND penalise less.
