Consider that perhaps its not Smith that's the problem, but the Roosters club themselves that some decent players don't want to be involved with. The headline players the Roosters have attracted in the last 10 years were overrated duds who were at the club for the wrong reasons. Smith cannot be blamed for that.

The question was about Smith and the last time he lured a top class player.
I'm struggling to come up with one.
Maybe The Mack can help with this one.Born and bred in the eastern suburbs.

Tahu, top class?
I'll let you get away with that one!
Probably a more interesting question is when was the last time Smith tried to sign a top class player?

I think this is true. Smith is not the kind of coach who has generally gone after top class players. He prefers to work with young up and coming players, and good quality players looking for opportunities. Note that Nathan Hindmarsh has stated that Smithy is the coach who has taught him the most out of all the coaches he has played under over the years.

Chook.
And when I say 'star players' I mean so-called star players. Which generally means players who WERE stars at their previous clubs but are probably past their prime now - ie Mason, O'MeleyLast edited by mightyrooster; 10-28-2011, 12:22 PM.

Smith cant attrack a class player because I highly doubt that any of them would want to play under him nowadays.
Which begs the next question. IF we are really after sbw (thats a big if I guess), then what role would smith be playing in that I wonder. My guess is NONE.
What would all that mean going forward I wonder...

Lets remember Smith came here to do a job. The job most clubs employ him to do. I think he is doing that job, and doing it well.
I don't think he was employed to attract big name players.
The jury is out on him for sure. This year is a big year for him. However he must have scored atleast a pass mark so for on what we have seen.

As for the Wanka - I did mention the word 'decent' which the Wanka wasn't at the Roosters - he was a dud. One of many.
Face it, the Roosters have struggled to attract any top liners for years, no matter who the coach is. They get them when they're on the slippery slope to mediocrity and below and just hasten the journey down.
