  • Rugby star signs a two-year deal with the Roosters

By Dean Ritchie December 03, 2008

SYDNEY Roosters recruit Sisa Waqa is a player who has been described as a combination of Greg Inglis and Israel Folau rolled into one.

In rugby union's Shute Shield this year, he scored 26 tries in just 18 games playing for Gordon.

Now flying winger Waqa has walked away from the 15-man code to sign a two-year contract with the Roosters worth about $150,000.

Waqa, 21, could become a "sensation" in the NRL, according to Gordon coach Lachlan Fear.

"He has the physical attributes to destroy rugby league," Fear said.

"Sisa is a mix of (Australia stars) Greg Inglis and Israel Folau. He has power, footwork and speed. He has the shape of Inglis and the ability to run through people like Folau.

"He is naturally strong and very disciplined. He is a professional sportsman."

Rather than be bitter, Fear said he was pleased Waqa had moved on to rugby league.

"Sisa will leave a big hole for us - one that will be difficult to fill," he said.

"He is a superstar in the making. It just depends how long it takes for him to adapt to league.

"But we are happy to be able to help him further his career. We have been the catalyst for him to earn a contract we can't match."

Waqa has already started training with the Roosters and is hoping to make the club's top 25 squad.

"It will be a big challenge for me, changing codes," he said.

"The hardest part will be adapting to the environment and the training. League is a bit tough and hard, especially at NRL level.

"There will be a lot of competition but by working hard in the pre-season, I'm ready to prove I can make it with the Roosters and play first grade."

Waqa has represented Fijian schoolboys, under-19s, under-21s and Fiji A and has a promising league future, according to Roosters chief executive Steve Noyce.

"He is an exciting outside back," Noyce said.

"(Roosters recruitment officer) Peter O'Sullivan heard about him through a rugby contact and then looked at a few tapes of Sisa.

"He was then invited to train with us. He was impressive to the extent where we signed him and he is now part of our club."

We have clear problems starting with recruitment

More like a combination of Stuart Davis and Sandy Campbell.

I'm not going to write this guy off just yet given that the difference between the Shute Shield and the NRL is massive not to mention having to learn a new game.
Though I do agree with you redrooster, recruitment is a bit of a problem.

This is O'Sullivan's first acid test. ill give him the benefit of the doubt as he has the runs on the board with Falou and Inglis. Time will prove how good this bloke is and that Falau and Inglis werent flukes.

As for Sisa, I hope the kid slays them next season. I recall a certain Winger who couldnt catch a cold in 99, and by 2003 was the Australian Fullback and Golden Boot winner. Mini and Perret were teh same....they came/are coming good. Lets give this Sisa kid our backing and get him up (so to speak). Plus the only other choice we have is Sonny and Cher.

He had a good game on Saturday night. People always talk signings up. Give him time. I think he will come good

I can imagine Sisa would be great on the end of a good backline. He can sniff out a try, has LOTS of pace (he ran down Vuna vs Knights) ... he just looks like a natural player trying to find his feet in a team that isn't giving him good ball.

At the end of the day he needs to get try scoring opportunities. His debut against the Broncos was a tough assignment. They targeted him and Sa all game. He didn't get much help that night.

He obviously has footballing talent, just needs time to find his feet.

He is streets ahead of Tuigamala.

Tuigamala scored a try in a winning side for the Jets on the weekend...

I don't know why I don't think he is as bad as some of you do...

Sonny is the Penrith junior, is that correct..??

Maybe you haven't watched his appearances in first grade this season? Or maybe we are making him out to be the worst player in history, Todd Byrne standards. Either way. He is playing for Newtown right now. And that's where he belongs for now

So much of it is a confidence thing...IMO

The difference is that Tuigamala has pace, and little else. He has little confidence, and it seriously affects his ability in the air, he becomes a bundle of nerves under the high ball.

Waqa is a much more intimidating physical presence, still needs more confidence too but is a better target under the high ball, as well as having the ability to break tackles far better.

Because he has dropped 6 out of 6 bombs which has led to 5 tries and probably cost us 3 games?
