  • THE Sydney Roosters land a coup by signing Melbourne assistant Adam O’Brien.

    CHOOKS’ BACKROOM BOOST

THE Sydney Roosters have landed a coup by signing Melbourne assistant Adam O’Brien.

O’Brien is a gun coach and it is considered a matter of time before he takes the head role somewhere in the NRL.

Part of the lure to leave Melbourne behind was working with head coach Trent Robinson.

“He really wanted to come to us to be with Robbo for two or three years before he goes out on his own,” Roosters supremo Nick Politis said.

It was thought O’Brien had re-signed with Melbourne earlier this year when Craig Bellamy’s future was being decided but that was not the case.

O’Brien will resume his work with Cooper Cronk next season when he takes over the Roosters’ attack.

The Roosters have held off announcing O’Brien’s appointment out of respect to current attack coach Jason Taylor.

The Roosters look set to take over the association with the North Sydney Bears, who are the feeder club for South Sydney, and Robinson is keen for Taylor to oversee that.

“This is his area,” Robinson said. “He’ll be great at it.”

Robinson believes Taylor is a strong development coach and the Bears, who he once captained, are in his sweet spot.

So JT as the head coach of the Bear's they reckon? Or, is this just lifted from the Pen?

      Great news.

Always good to evolve even when you're at the top.

So the Roosters are letting themselves be used as a stepping stone for O'Brien. Is the logic for letting a potential future rival into the inner circle is that they'll get more out of O'Brien than they'll lose by letting him see the inner workings of the Roosters?

I think the pro's outweigh the con's. If we take this attitude then why develop players?

And it's confirmed that we're linking with the Bears next season?

I like the Bears association. Never hated them.

The sign of a well run business is when they look to improve not only in tough times but in good times too. Well done Roosters.

Interesting point of view, though I see coaches being closer to the inner workings of a club than players hack'. It's for that reason that this doesn't make sense to me as the Roosters are a well run club and the NRL a competitive landscape.

Some really good things in this article.

Having the Bears as a feeder is awesome and a big **** you to souffs so that’s rad. Taylor seems more suited to this kind of role to which is also good.

Melbourne have been the best team of the past decade and surely their assistant coach through it all would have been a big part in that.

As for O’Brien just using us as a stepping stone, that’s a negative attitude IMO. He’ll learn off us and we’ll learn off him, it’s mutually beneficial. It shows a lot about Robbo if future coaches are wanting to delay their own top flight careers just to learn off Robbo; especially when they’re already under Bellamy.

Who know's what the future holds? Robbo has stated previously his long term plan is to return to France. Maybe this succession planning?

Your not wrong, I agree that coaches have far more knowledge on integral details that actually make a club. I personally think that Robbo only knows how to do 2 or 3 things really well... 1) He knows how to manage people (players, coaches, staff, etc). 2) He understands the defensive side of the game really well. 3) He knows that he can only do 2 or 3 things and will actively find/manage others that are good at 2 or 3 things to do everything else.

He knows that he can't do everything and accepts that... any successful business is built and run by a great team, not by a great individual... Robbo understands this as fact and not detriment. If you can't do something well, then find someone that does and hire them to do it. It's what separates the 'well run clubs' from the Sea Eagles. Throwing all your eggs in one basket and expecting a single coach to change the attack, defence, attitude, fitness, game management, game knowledge, kicking, playmaking, set plays, contracts, buys, retention, youth, etc is a fools game.

Every assistant coach is using their current role as a stepping stone.
